Hi, Five and I were just in Bali last June. We stayed in a place called Puri Bunga Resort and Spa in Ubud. It was a beautiful location, wonderful view (if you get the right room). The place was very quiet and relaxing but not the cleanest. The other place we stayed at was called Matahari Terbit Bali Deluxe Bungalows. It was just on OK place. If you want to be on the beach I recommend you avoid the Nusa Dua part of the island. The beaches are not good at all. You can check out my and other people's reviews on a website called tripadvisor.com

We rented a car over there, it was very affordable if you're comfortable driving in a country you're not familiar with. Food was very expensive compared to Thailand. The prices for the food are comparable to Utah prices, so we had sticker price shock being used to Thai prices. If you have any questions you can send me a message and I'll try to help.

Edit of my last post:

We rented a car over there, it was very affordable if you're comfortable driving in a country you're not familiar with. We were pulled over by a cop just out of the airport. He wanted us to give him money for breaking a traffic rule. I talked our way out of it, just played dumb, and in the end he even led us on his motorcycle to the correct road on our way to Ubud.

Food was very expensive compared to Thailand. The prices for the food are comparable to Utah prices, so we had sticker price shock being used to Thai prices. Also the food is not anything to write about, just average.

Our favorite part of the trip was going to a Dance performance. Five does traditional Thai dancing (her mom is a dance teacher) and she said she found the Indonesian dancing more interesting than the Thai way.

I'd have to go back and look through all my papers to give you exact names of places we visited. If you are interested let me know and I can give you a more complete review of our time in Bali. You can send me a message and I'll try to help.

Last time I was there was in 2007, we stayed at the all season hotel in legian http://allseason-resort.com/. At the time it was around $40 USD a night.

Taxi fares are a little bit more expensive than some other areas, but if you want a driver you can basically rent any taxi for the day. Negotiate a fee up front for that however. The best beach that I went to there was Dreamland beach, its a bit out of the way, but its quite beautiful and generally not as many people.

I've been there a fair bit and I'd have to agree with the Nusa Dua advice. Just stay clear of Kuta Beach other than for a day trip; it's full of drunken students and worse, more annoying hawkers than any other destination in SE Asia.
