Also alternatively, you really should go to a different office, and apply.

Thanks. I don't mind writing one hundred pages to the congressman's office if it will speed things up for me.

Can you just go to any social security office and apply even if your address is in a completely different area? The clerk I saw back in late May when I went in to check on my missing application told me I couldn't do that. He said they can only send an application off and have a social security card mailed to a local address. Back in May I was going to reapply using a temporary address located in a different area of Florida because we were in the process of moving house (turns out my I-94 was about to expire so I was unable to make another application that day anyway). This is one reason why I'm reluctant to have my husband take time away from work to drive me to the West Palm Beach location or have a friend take me there, too.

If I do go to another location, perhaps tomorrow, will that cause problems having 2 applications ongoing?

Had you not submitted an application, you could have gone to any Social Security office to apply, unless you live in an area supported by a Card Center. Since you have a pending application, you can't submit another, or you will cause yourself even more problems. Did you do what I suggested?

Yes. I typed the reference number as "one zero two.." etc. Haven't heard anything back as yet.

Do you get an acknowledgment e-mail? If you did it's in the queue to be answered.

I didn't but the site said my question had been submitted and somebody would get back to me. Should I send another email?

Good news! Somebody from social security just called me (thanks so much "I Quit" for the advice on how to contact them). The guy said he had contacted the office for me and they have just put in the secondary request. He said "unfortunately the person you saw didn't know what they were doing". Yeah, unfortunately all three people I have seen at that office haven't known what they were doing! He said that on the bright side if the secondary doesn't come back with a match then at least the G-845 is on its way to immigration so there's a headstart on that. He also said he'd keep an eye on the application for me and apologized for everything.

I got an email from social security today (my application is being monitored after I sent in a complaint about the local office). I guess I couldn't be verified electronically because they say DHS are requesting a copy of my EAD. "Since, the Social Security office has already submitted the copy of your Form I-766 along with Form G-845, there is no other action that needs to be taken at this time. We will continue to monitor the status of your application."

Happy news. Got an email saying my application was processed and to expect my card within the next 2 weeks. Phew! It had become such an ordeal and really you're almost invisible in this country without a SSN. Thanks to everyone for their help! I'd still be stressing out and getting nowhere fast without you!
