Employment after visa

Quick question. My husband just received his CR1 visa and entered the country last week. He has a job interview this week and we are wondering if he is okay to apply for or accept the position if he has not received his social security card yet? Also, is there any additional documentation that a CR1 visa holder needs in order to be employed?

ya, check (carefully) the I-9 form. (google this 'I-9 form' )

As is, he has one piece of the puzzle, the I-551 stamp in the passport - that's a temporary green card, validates the visa to be used (up to 1 year) as a temporary green card.

He'll need a SSN - best bet is to go into the SSA office and apply -

but

ask the clerk to look him up in the SAVE database, using both VISA NAME and A# -

and

if they can't find him in SAVE - go away, don't 'allow' the application to be accepted -

come back in a week, and try to apply, mentioning SAVE again, again.

He can't be issued a SSN until a SSA clerk (they are mostly braindead, btw, 10 times more doltish than the USCIS CSR tele-operators) actually finds him in the SAVE database. When he's found, 'let' the application go through, then come back 1 to 2 days later, they will give him the number (and the card shows up in the mail).

Good Luck ! Chasing a SSN is either straighforward, or is really mind-numbingly painful !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

He needs to fill out I-9 form. He can just convince the employer after the interview about SSN will be ready soon and to wait.

I had the same question not too long ago and got a good answer.

Here's what Darnell said:

Minimum -

I-551 stamp in the passport and

SSN

usually, the current version of the I-9 form has the latest and greatest 'documentation' requirements.

Thanks again to Darnell.

Edit: You guys answered faster than I could :)
