2. I do not wish to get in a PeTA debate with you. But your 'hypocrite' term for the people of the organisation is a false one. Remember, people who work with PeTA do so for one reason- to try to limit the suffering of non-human animals. They do this selflessly. You can not be employed by the organisation unless you are vegan- that is do not eat, wear, or support (both emotionally and economically) anything that exploits animals for human purposes. I see no hypocracy in that.

I once got bitched at for wearing fur from a vegetarian friend:

Her: blah blah blah you're such a sh!t!

Me: why?

Her: wearing animal skin is wrong! it's mean! omGwtfbbqsoap!

Me: hey! nice shoes, they new?

Her: *flattered & starting to shift her leg to look at her lovely shoes with adoration* yep, just got them yesterday

Me: they leather?

Her: of course! man made shoes make my feet sweat

Me: *silently looking at her waiting for the penny to drop*

Her: erm, yeah but a cow is eaten...so it's used for more than one thing...

Me: but YOU don't believe in eating them?

Her: well of course not! I could never kill an animal for food!

Me: ...but you wear their skin as a byproduct of someone else killing them??? So you are directly supporting a process that you abhorr...right?

Her: well, they're at least not killed JUST for their skin

Me: So when is it ok to kill an animal?

Her: never! Meat is murder!

Me: But you'll sit back and reap the benefits of murdering an animal?

Her: erm...

Me: So going by your logic, you'd be fine with me wearing mink if I ate the animal? Or even if someone, somewhere ate it?

Her: eating mink is wrong!

Me: what about a chinchilla?

Her: I gotta go

this actually did happen

Ya, people are funny. Pigs are funny too. :help:

sounds a lot like the conversation i had with a now ex german g/f once. she claimed to love animals yet sold leather shoes, belts, purses, handbags, etc. and wore all of that too :P

on some the irony is apparently wasted

The objections aren't just about the killing of the animal but the inhumane treatment while it's alive followed by a brutul process of skinning the animal and leaving it to bleed to death. There are more humane ways to treat animals whether we eat them or not or whether we wear their skins and furs.

Yes, but PETA doesn't want us to eat them either. From their web site:

"PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

Please don't recreate my own history....the objections you've raised are not the same as the ones she did.

Kthxbye

Dammit, I came to this thread hoping to see some pics of a woman having sex with a pig and all we get is a lot of brouhaha about PETA?

Ok, instead of just jumping on the PeTA=hypocrites band wagon, actually try and think about it. I know that Penn and Teller clip (with very intelligent comments such as 'nobody gets off on hurting animals' (you sure about that!?), and 'these remarkably thin protestors' (when healthy, and not overweight became an insult im not sure?)), and I know they try to criticise the PeTA vice president for being a type II diabetic. Yes these treatments were developed in a lab using dogs- however we are not given a choice of how drugs are developed. Animal research is very outdated, and many many professionals agree that there are far more effective methods. There is much evidence to suggest that animal research has delayed medical research considerably. However, these cost money to put into place, and no one so far has ben willing to tkae that cut in profits. We can not live in a bubble. The carpet we walk on will be dyed with products tested on animals, the stain in the wood of the chairs we sit on..... there is nothing we can do about that- it has already happened. It is about preventing it in the future.

PeTA is not the worlds collection of animal rights supporters. PeTA is just one non-profit organisation. If you knew anything about the topic you would try to target your criticisms at animal rights supporters- not PeTA. PeTA just takes the brunt of it, because they are such a large, well supported group.

And LisaD- just because the one person you knew displayed some hypocracy in her criticisms does not mean by any stretch that all animal rights supporters wear leather. I certainly dont. Nor wool, silk and so on.

I'm an animal rights supporter too Laura! :)

I'm not interested in some of the methods many groups use to draw attention to their cause, but I AM interested in the cause itself.

I wish those two things could be separated so people could see how important treating animals well is, even if we eat them afterward. That would be a huge first step.

Yes you are right. The fur industry can be considered as more cruel in its methods, and with no justifiable qualties. Fur in western society is worn only for vanity and greed.

It is about doing the MOST that a person can to limit the suffering of those with whome we share this earth.

Yay!

Yes the whole issue is a complex one. There is much disagreement with regards to the best methods to emply to educate the public to the hidden atrocities of the industries. My opinion has swayed throughout the course of my life. I used to see legislative practices as the most constructive- then I moved to the practices of the ALF- I saw so little changing in the law, I figured the only way to help animals when they need us- now- was to remove them from the abuse. Now Im a little calmer, and see all the aspects of the movement as useful. After all, it is the largest, most successful political movement of today.

Whatever methods the movement employs, they will always be criticsed. People dont want to know what goes on to provide them with food, clothing and luxuries- so they are going to fight it, so as not to have to acknowledge it.
