I am just wondering how often people travel home to see their family/ in-laws?

I have a very good relationship with my fiance's family and don't want to loose it once he gets here. I know it will vary from person to person/ situation to situation-

Thanks for your votes!

My home country is Canada, so although home in Canada is in the west and Home in the US is in the east, it is a relatively quick trip, and if you can catch some sales or get lucky on priceline bidding....you can do it fairly cheaply!

It really is a cost issue for me. Getting back to yhe UK is easy enough but in the summer this year tickets were upward of $950 whereas a few years ago it was maybe $600-700. I used some airmiles to get a reduced fare this Novemebr so its only $550, but i cant really justify it too often. I'd go back 3 or 4 times a year if I could.

I try to visit my family every year for 2-3 weeks (depending how many days off I accrue) but my husband so far has only made it back once so he is in the once every two years category - mainly because it's dependent on when his annual military training is scheduled. In 2008 and this year it just so happened his training was when I booked travel so he couldn't join me.

Ghana tickets are the lowest at 1200! and that is rare...So travel back and forth often is hard- we at least plan to get his family a laptop so we can skype after our first visit- its better then nothing...

I have been living in the US for 5 1/2 years now and I have been back home twice and my parents have been down here twice and we met about half way this summer in Oregon..

I really wish I lived closer to the Canadian border so I could see my family more often...

Aiming for once a year myself. Expense is an issue, as I suppose it is for many others! I'm still paying off the flight I stuck on my credit card last February.

My parents are taking alternate turns to come and visit, too, so I see one parent twice a year.

Vacation is also an issue...just to visit my family for a week (and a week leaves little time in which to see all my relatives and friends - I return exhausted!) uses up more than half of my vacation time.

We just returned from Ecuador on Monday, si man. We went this year & last year, but this may be the last for a while, because Mrs. T-B. is heavy with child (due in January), & neither of us relishes traveling internationally -- let alone to her hometown in the boonies -- with an infant or toddler, no man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I moved here this year, and we've already been back to the UK (for a funeral). Some of my family are coming here next year, and then the following year we will be over for a friend's wedding. We definitely won't be going more than yearly. I would say every 5 years, but I expect to have to attend several weddings so it will probably be more. My husband would quite happily visit as much as we could, but personally (although I'm the immigrant!) I would rather spend any additional vacation time/money we had on travelling to other places. That is one of the negatives on moving here, it had completely destroyed my vacation plans for life  I guess once we have kids we will travel less, so maybe the real answer is once a decade.

I moved to the US in Sept 09 and I came back to Australia Sept 2010. The only reason I came back is for family illness, and it was paid for by my family because of it. I would hoped to have come back for Christmas with my husband but that's not in the plans now. I'm hoping we can visit Australia sometime next year so he gets a chance to meet my dad before he passes but it all depends on finances. Following that, we'd prolly visit every other year, possibly more possibly less. Honestly depends on money mostly (that and it's a long flight which gets old quick)

We really just don't know at the moment. I moved here in May and have mentioned rough plans about my mom possibly coming here to visit next spring (using my airmiles) but she's never travelled internationally, doeasn't have a passport and doesn't have a lot of money either so who knows? We moved here with our labrador from the UK so we cant just up and leave as I dont have anyone here who I'd trust to take care of her. I'm already starting to miss home so I hope we can work something out soon but we're not exactly able to afford flight tickets now anyway.
