Its very important to keep in mind that proper procedures for obtaining a tourist visa vary from country to country. What might be important in one country is not necessarily important in another. While it is true that the DOS has, in writing , claimed that strong ties to the home country are paramount (paraphrasing) this is simply not true at all consulates. At some consulates, an invitation letter IS an important document to include during the interview. Since tips for obtaining a tourist visa vary depending on the consulate, my assertion is that this is a question better answered by someone who has direct knowledge of the consulate in question.
