I am helping my boyfriend get a visa to come to the US from South Africa.

We've been working our butts off.

I was just hoping someone could provide some help / tips / ANYTHING that might make the appointment go well.

I've been hearing horror stories about how some visa officers dont even let the candidate explain or show documents, they just deny them.

On my side, I've provided him with full sponsorship documents:

-an invitation letter

-a letter addressed to the consulate

-copy of my passport

-2 bank statements with sufficient funds

-previous years tax returns

On his side

- All the required forms/passport

- Lease agreement & letter from landlord saying he will be paying rent & expected to return

- Employment letter with permission for vacation, stating salary and employment dates

The things I'm concerned about are

-he just opened a bank acct (i wont go into details) but he doesnt have any bank statments

-he doesn't have any bills or accounts or investments to show

- i was wondering how he could show strong family ties, he has four brothers who all expect him back

also a big question is whether or not he should buy a ticket before the appointment.

many people that HAVE gotten a visa that i've personally asked say to buy the round trip ticket so you can show the consulate

but obviously the website says not to buy it.

please help me with some positive energy, i am so stressed.

B1/B2 is not guaranteed, you can do as much as you want, but CO has to be convinced that person would return back after the trip.

Reading your case most likey CO would go why is someone from US sponsoring someone else trip? Then the question would be how did you guys know each other etc?

To be honest, I'm inviting him and sponsoring his trip because while I was there he did the same for me, basically paid for my trip and provided me with accomodation.

Is that a good answer basically "Because she invited me as a way to say thanks for showing her South Africa" ?

He will be applying for a tourist visa and will need to show strong ties to home. The USCIS assumes that all applicants have immigrant intent. Going to visit a fiancee is more problematic than goig to visit a friend or even girlfriend.

The letter from work stating vacation dates, lease, mobile phone bill, any utility bills, etc. all help demonstrate ties to home.

I am not seeing the "fiance" part in your post. To me it reads as if you want to help him to become a visitor's visa (B2).

If so, you should not even be in the picture. He has to show that he has every reason to return to Africa, and the less incentive for him exists to ever stay in the US, the better. For an immigration official who always assumes immigration intent, having a good friend living in the US would only raise suspicion that the applicant would consider staying or overstaying or trying to get married and apply for AOS.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Well I really dont know if that is a good answer to be honest - simple reason is how many ppl try to immigrate to South Africa compared to US.

It was upto govt of South Africa to let you in the country or not, American consulate will always look as every applicant has intent to immigrate and hence you need to show that you have strong ties back in your home country.

Your friend will have to demonstrate he is not interested in living in US and he will return back home to his home country after the visit.

So show all his bank account, any property he owns, his family living back in south Africa (this is not really a help), he is currently employed, his business dealings if he is in business.

He has to show he is living a good life in South Africa and he would not want to give that up.

I don't know if you've ever gone months without seeing the person you love, but you tend to explore every possible option.

So thank you for your sarcasm.

Nope, not scarcasm. The first thing they're going to ask him for is a return ticket. Asking if you have one is not out of the ordinary as a lot of people do not have a return ticket.

If you are exploring every possible option, then a return ticket should have been one you've explored.

But thank YOU

Good luck

Sorry, my apologies I was actually really testy the other day. I'm just trying to think of everything.

Thank you :)

Hi. Getting a tourist visa varies from case to case. I went to visit my fiancee on a B-2 visa, I had all the documents from my side for the embassy and the girl at the embassy didnt ask for anything from me. I pay slips, letter from employee, invitation letter, bought round trip ticket and they didnt ask for anything. She asked me where I work and how much I earn and that was it...

No funds on his account and you sponsoring him may affect his visa application negatively.
