Are there any good ones out there? I've read about a few, but the reviews concern me.

I don't ever 'get' an international sim card -

I do carry, though, several unlocked GSM phones with me -

so that when I get in the airport - I can buy a prepaid sim card, then start making calls.

Later on in the day, or the next day, I buy into a service, or pop in the sim card for the service plan I bought the last time I was there (depending)

I use this 'buying pattern' for China and UK.

Is this a 'first time purchase' for you?

USUALLY, is cheaper to 'buy' in the country you wish to use it in - just local service, then purchase an IDD (long distance) pre-paid card, unless you need to do something really really crazy.

----

Perhaps I'm confused? Are you looking for an 'international sim card' to use in USA, with low rates on international calls to Thailand?

Or a service that can be 'homed' to a thailand number, but answers when in USA, bypassing all the international roaming charges?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I'm looking for an international SIM card. That is, a SIM card that will work while roaming in many different countries. It is not for me, rather for my MIL. I need to make it as easy as possible to contact us during her travels, as she does not speak any English.

IMO, have larger purchase options in MIL's home country, also can get reduced rate on international roaming service plans, for most 'subscription' carriers in her country.

Anyone local in her country that can wrangle through all of the product offerings in her country, or *gasp* are YOU the one stuck with this search?

I've already checked one local carrier in Thailand. International roaming rates are incredibly high. Some "international sim cards" seem to have reasonable roaming rates when calling from and to many countries. I'm trying to find one that has proved itself to be reliable and free of surprises.

Maybe it's $.89 in Canada, but nowhere near that anywhere else I bet.
