My dad is a UA pilot and you have NOTHING to worry about. The UA flight that was escorted, was escorted because a claustrophobic passenger got a little crazy and they just don't take chances anymore.

Further, safetywise, pilots on US carriers have FAR more experience than those of other airlines (i.e. any airline from China, Aeromexico, Mexicana, Avianca, etc.). Not that these airlines are unsafe, US airliners are just safer.

Go and fly. United is the second largest airline in the world, and is one of the safetst. Terrorists can no longer get into the cockpit and if they do, they will be treated to the fire axe or a 9mm pistol (Federal Flight Deck Officer FFDO program). You can even listen to the pilots talk on the radio on channel 9. Have a great flight and welcome to the friendly skies.

I think the biggest fear is just the way that you would die. Like the others said, what would happen if you didnt die from the initial blast, then you would be screwed! I was reading an article yesterday which said that the blast from a bottle of liquid would only take a car size hole out of the plane. So what would happen to the plane with the hole? It wouldnt be able to fly so you would probably end up plunging 40,000 feet and land in the Atlantic! Now THAT is an awfully scary thought!

if you ever want a real scare read the statistics on road fatalities (which are really high in the US versus a lot of places in the world) and then go out and look at the number of people who do things like try and text message someone while driving 40 mph -- i see people like this every day and they kind of scare me more

If your 'number' is up, it's up...No use worrying about it

yea, but i don't want to be on the plane when the pilot's number is up. seriously, no fear of flying here, even having been on a 727 years ago that lost an engine in flight, if i need to fly somewhere i'll get on the plane w/o giving it a second thought, especially to be with my wife!

Nope... I fly all the time and never give it a second thought... and I've also experienced aborted take-off and landings... just part of the process. I don't worry about things that I cannot control.

Subject: Blind Pilots ?

Two men dressed in pilot's uniforms walk up the aisle of the airplane.

Both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane.

Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up.

The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke.

None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and the people sitting in the window seats realize they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport territory.

As it begins to look as though the plane will plough into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin.

At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon all retreat into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands.

In the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, "You know, Bob, one of these days, they're gonna scream too late and we're all gonna die.

I'm not afraid of flying, i'm afraid of crashing lol. well maybe i would hate the plunge most of all since i cant even stand fast carnival rides. infact i've grown a bit weary of the farris wheel lately. so its the trip down that would freak me out the most.

HAHAHA!!! thats whats up!!

Its funny to hear what people say about airplane safety... Its not funny that people are scared, i just find it amusing to hear how people think airplanes fall out of the sky...

and for the record cmartyn you are not ten times more likely to die in an airplane, in fact if you fly the top 25 airlines (safety record speaking) you chances of dying are 1 in 6.3 million.

if you were to fly the bottom 25 airlines (record of safety) your chances of dying are 1 in 543,000, these stats are from the DOT and the NTSB from the 1950's up until 2004

(Sidenote) according to the Federal Highway Safety Administration, the rate of

US automobile deaths per hundred million miles driven is roughly

2.41. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the

rate of scheduled commercial airline passenger deaths per hundred

million aircraft miles for the last ten years has varied between zero

and 0.2. In other words, looking at the worst year for aircraft, the

risk of death in an automobile on a per-mile basis was still twelve

times larger than in a plane. even in the worst year in the last ten

years, the chances of you having a fatal accident on a given flight

were one in a million.

Cars make me nervous, I hate driving...

I'd rather be in an airplane any day, up front flying!! Now that u mention it I am about 3-5 days a week!
