Ok with all of them news about London, the UA flight this week that has been escorted to another airport by F 16 Fighterjets and the story about VW..........

I have always been scared of flying (actually not always but was on a very rocky flight one time where even the crew had to stay on their seats for long periods of time ,and ever since then I AM scared),but now with all of this I'm getting more and more nervous.

My little boy and I are going to fly over to the USA in 3 weeks and 6 days (yeah counting down it's been too long since I saw my man!),we needed to find an affordable ticket in a short amount of time so I really didn't care about the Airline too much.Well turns out the only flight we could find (concerning time and pice) was/is a United Airline flight .Due to my man living in WA we will again be flying from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast.....with United Airlines........just 3 days after the 5th "anniversery" of 9/11......

People am I the only one scared???????

My man tells me "well if it happens it happens, nothing you can do.....",my friends tell me "you'll be fine",my family says "WHY are you flying with UA???????? Have you not heared the news ,don't you think of UA 93?"

Gee yeah I am scared but I will not allow terrorists to keep me from the one I love!!!!!!!

Gimme your opinions ..........

And no there's NO WAY I would cancel the flights or book with another airline. To cancel would mean ,I wont see my man, booking another airline I can't afford since I'm already paying 1220 Euros (1378$).

No. We are more likely to die in a car than die on a plane.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Yes, being afraid of flying is 99% irrational. LuckyStrike is right (gasp) driving is WAY more dangerous, regardless of terrorism. Take that plane, stop listening to people who are trying to protect you but being irrational, and have a great time with your SO.

:yes::yes::yes:

Besides, life is uncertain, death is certain. So why worry ? ;)

On the lighter note, I'm sure you'll be fine, even with UA. Enjoy your flight ! :)

Yeah no reason to be worried.. like everyone else has said .. you are less safe in your car.. to hold things against UA because of what happened 5 years ago is silly. I have never had a problem with UA and I fly with them everywhere.. But in case you are scared when you fly take a mood relaxer.. stay calm.. stay safe.. and ask for one of those little moist towel thingis.. oh... and can you grab a thing of their butter for me?

To answer the question you asked, no, I am not scared of flying - never have been.

And I'm not about to offer you platitudes about how it is safer to fly than drive or whatever; because you know all this already. You admit you have always been nervous about flying - this fear is not a rational response to terrorist attacks, it is just nerves and you'd be as frightened if there hadn't been terror attacks.

Not scared to fly at all. Soooooooo unlikely that I would be on a plane where there was an 'incident' that it's not even worth thinking about. In fact I always feel that it's safer to fly after some sort of incident and on the anniversary of attacks because you know that security measures are going to be tighter than usual.

And why would you have any specific worries about flying on United?

BTW what's ' the story about VW' you mention in your post? Have I missed something?

I love to fly, but I'm weird. I can't wait until the Airbus 380 is used widely so I can take a vacation just to fly on it. :)

That said, lots of people feel the way you do (though that diverted UA flight had nothing to do w/ terrorism, btw - just an out of control clausterphobic woman). Its easy to be scared of something that is out of your control and in someone else's control (like a pilot). But really - would you rather fly the plane or let a seasoned pilot do it? ;)

Terrorists WANT you to be scared to fly. Do you really want them to have that power over you?

Same here. I like the 777 and also flew to Thailand on the upper deck of a 747. Very cool. I don't like UA for long haul flights. You are better off with a foreign carrier.
