ore Whooping Cough Cases Reported As 9th Infant Dies In Calif.

BY JOANNE FARYON

September 16, 2010

SAN DIEGO — A ninth infant has died from whooping cough, or pertussis, in California. The baby was less than two months old and lived in San Bernardino County, according to health officials.

In San Diego County, the number of people getting sick with whooping cough is increasing weekly.

More than 100 new cases of whooping cough have been reported in the past three weeks in San Diego County. The total so far this year is 554 -- almost four times as many as last year.

The county's deputy health officer, Dr. Dean Sidelinger, said the disease tends to peak this time of year. Sidelinger says there could also be an increased number of cases this month as more kids head back to school.

“Pertussis is highly contagious and with more people, including more students, having pertussis this year than in years past certainly we will likely see some spread,” Sidelinger said.

The county is offering free and reduced cost immunizations at several locations this weekend. And beginning tomorrow, the San Diego Intl. Airport will offer the vaccine for a fee.

I read this illness is at its highest level since 1955.

It's no secret a lot of these illnesses are making a comeback and I suppose some could blame the deaths and suffering on those who encouraged the free flow of unchecked people into this country.

Why on earth would I blame illegals? I caught whooping cough when I was 17. I didn't blame illegals then, nor do I do so now, I DO blame the parents (in this article) who aren't immunising their children against an illness which is KNOWN to kill kids.. it's completely irresponsible. I'm not saying it's their "fault" their kids died, but they certainly failed in their "duty of care", or perhaps they were simply uneducated about it... as sad as it is, lets hope this news exposure gets more parents concerned about their kids health and have them realise the importance of adequate immunisations.

In my case, I WAS immunised as a child, what they didn't tell my mum was that it "wears off" around 10 years of age, and you should get a booster... bit late. I was a healthy girl, swimming regularly (competitions etc) and playing in a brass band gave me a large lung capacity and I was STILL out of commission for several months, I couldn't even swim 10 metres without collapsing into coughing fits requiring ventolin (asthma drugs). My elderly father caught it as it's just as dangerous as it is with babies so that was a bit scary.

i blame humans: "Whooping cough is caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. Humans are the only known reservoir of these bacteria."

i also blame those who cant be bothered to keep their ill children at home and the disgusting people who do not teach their children proper hygiene techniques in general and keep on top of them so spread of illness is minimal (keep hands clean, cover sneezes and coughs, dont put fingers in mouth, etc).

daycares and schools are living petri dishes YUCK!

i'd like to see the stats for deaths from vaccines versus deaths that supposedly could have been prevented by pertussis vaccine.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39220447

"All of the whooping cough-related deaths in California occurred in babies too young to be fully immunized against the illness" so how many were of an age to be vaccinated, didnt get vaccinated, and died? hmmm?

These diseases always make a 'comeback' every now and again, parents get slack with vaccinations because they think diseases are long gone. I also caught it as a kid.

And I think she/he gave it....right in the opening sentence.

Do you also blame your mum (and dad?) for not educating themselves about this disease and the proper vaccines (i.e. 'booster')for their children?

i find it interesting you blame the parents of these babies, babies who were not old enough to be vaccinted, for the deaths of their babies. COLD.

you dont believe most new parents are "concerned about their kids health"??? sounds like you dont have children or you'd know what it feels like to be a new parent.

How do you think the babies got the disease? I don't read anywhere where anybody blamed the parents of the babies that died....."blaming parents who do not vaccinate."

ummm who knows, perhaps from children carrying the bug at daycare who love to touch the babies or who do not know proper hygiene, coughing and sneezing all over the place... from stores where people allow their children to run rampant, touching everything and everyone... the list could be endless.

you must have missed Vanessa&Tony's post (the post to which i responded, to which you then responded). exact quote from their original post "I DO blame the parents (in this article)..."

is it so hard to understand: THE BABIES WHO DIED WERE TOO YOUNG TO BE GIVEN THE VACCINE. How is that the parent's fault and how did they fail in their "duty of care"? DISGUSTING blaming parents for the death of their babies.

I blame Welshcookie

I didn't even think they regularly vaccinated for pertussis anymore. I know its given with diptheria and tetanus when you're little, but once you get older and get tetanus boosters they don't give you a pertussis booster unless you work in healthcare.

eta: I found it on the cdc website

DTaP is not licensed for adolescents, adults, or children 7 years of age and older. But older people still need protection. A vaccine called Tdap is similar to DTaP. A single dose of Tdap is recommended for people 11 through 64 years of age. Another vaccine, called Td, protects against tetanus and diphtheria, but not pertussis. It is recommended every 10 years. There are separate Vaccine Information Statements for these vaccines.

A common argument by people who don't vaccinate is "If you're vaccine works so well, why are you worried if my kids aren't vaccinated?" Like mentioned before, some children are too young to receive the vaccine and that just happens to be an age when the disease is the most dangerous. If the child who gave the baby pertussis wasn't vaccinated, then it's that parents fault that some random baby got it and died...it's not the fault of the parent whose baby was to young to receive the vac.
