Hi,

My fiance and I are about to start our k-1 and we were wondering what the difference is between us doing the paperwork ourselves vs some of these online services, and if anyone knows exactly what these services do when charging 600-1500? We've researched into the application and how to go about doing it but are nervous/worried that if we do it ourselves we might "mess" up somehow. I would like to do this ourselves somehow to save the money (of course) - my fiance had to fly back to Australia today and we're distraught, by filing ourselves we would have money to fly out and see him (instead of saving it all for a lawyer). We have a 6 week old little girl and the separation is terrible but filing wrong or delaying the process would be even worse by possible error. I've had lawyers tell me they would do everything to some just charging a fee to "look over" paperwork I would fill out. I am confused about other online services. We want this over as soon as possible, this was his 3rd time visiting on a temporary visa. Would it be a mistake to do it ourselves? Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you all

Provided there's nothing too complicated with your case ie your fiance has a criminal record or an overstay issue then you can do the paperwork yourselves and save money. Ted and I did ours ourselves and I was approved at the end of August. There's also a great bunch of people here at VJ and in the Australian forum who can help you along the way anytime you have questions. With a little common sense, a lot of question asking and using the guides here at VJ its really not that hard :) Welcome to VJ and the K1 journey.

Hi CareBear,

Thank you very much, no there's nothing like that he has a clean record, educated and is enrolled in the Australian reserve, the only down side to our application is that we will require a co-sponsor and we don't have one as of yet. We're trying to find someone through a church here hopefully that works out and we can file soon. I've not been to work since having our daughter and I stopped working at a point while pregnant. I had private insurance with united but they didn't cover maternity so i applied for medicaid..I've spoken to a lawyer about this and he said it wouldn't affect the case, do you believe this to be true? Sometimes I think lawyers will tell you anything to get money - would they take our case knowing something wasn't going to work out..I question. I plan to return to work in 2 weeks. If we filed the k-1 ourselves and something maybe went amiss would we be able to file again, or would there be some negative side effect of it not going through the first time? thanks again - k1tt

Hey again Kitt,

With regards to the Medicaid I dont think it would affect your case, if you have a co-sponsor that meets their requirements then USCIS will be happy. If anything goes wrong with the k1 filing as in you dont fill in a form correctly or you forget to put something in then you will get an RFE (request for further evidence) rather than it being thrown out and starting again. The things they are interested in are 1) do you have a bona fide relationship, 2) are you both free to marry and 3) have you met in person in the last 2 years. Since you obviously tick all the boxes then honestly this is something that can be done by yourselves. And we're all happy to help any way that's needed.

Cheers

Carey
