Australia's first elected woman Prime Minister was sworn in today and was immediately faced with the challenge of keeping her coalition government together.

Julia Gillard, an atheist, became the first Prime Minister in the Australian federation's 109-year history to take an affirmation of office rather than swearing on the bible in Canberra, the capital city.

The ceremony followed weeks of uncertainty caused by an indecisive election result last month, leading to negotiations with independent and Green MPs by both Gillard's Labor Party and their conservative Liberal Party opponents.
