I will go against the grain here and say that the right immigration attorney is a big help. We are using one in China so the cost is relatively inexpensive and all they do is immigration from China so they know the process and the red flags/road blocks from that country. If you have an attorney, you still should be actively engaged in the process. Double check their work and let them double check yours. The big plus is if there is a problem then having an attorney from the beginning is a big help. Many attorneys won't pick up the case mid stream to deal with problems.

I am going through the CR-1 route right now. I am in the UK and married to USC hubby. We got an immigration lawyer and have been VERY disappointed! They basically sent us the wrong forms to start off with, so the posting of the I-130 was actually delayed by about a month. They wanted all the money up front, and after that have been very offhand when we call them for any reason. My worry now is that when the I-130 finally gets approved, they will sit on the NOA2 for ages because they are dealing with other cases and ours isnt a priority to them as it is to us.

As other posters have said, if your case is straightforward you will be able to do the forms yourself and save a FORTUNE.

So there is no point doing the K3 so glad we found this out before applying, a immigration lawyer actually advised me to do this.

That should be your answer to getting an attorney right there (at least that one).

In all seriousness though, as others have said, if your case is straightforward then you can do this yourselves. I was really really nervous about it myself , but over time reading VJ posts, guides, and the wonderful help from fellow VJers, I feel a little less anxious. IMO, an attorney, however, would be needed for denials and such, but one that handles only immigration.
