Work in one state, resident in another

(not sure which forum section to post this in to be honest...)

My husband (US citizen) has just been offered a promotion. The promotion is pretty much the same job as he does now (district manager) but for a lot more money. The promotion involves him overseeing the North Virginia/Washington DC area. The position is primarily "work from home" and he just has to make visits a few times a month to local offices. We currently live in Florida and love it here. We were thinking of him renting a small apartment in the DC area and commuting up there every couple of weeks and him spending about 3 days in the DC offices but keeping Florida as our main residence. We both abhor the idea of living in DC permanently and moving our whole life up there. Plus, he has his eye on managing the Miami area and as soon as that opens up then the job is his.

Is living in two states likely to cause major issues with USCIS? Of course we'll have things in joint names in both properties. I probably won't travel up to DC with him all of the time as there's just no point. 3 days every couple of weeks is not a huge burden to be apart for. We're just concerned about raising "red flags" with his pay checks being based in DC (he'll pay state taxes up there) but being resident down here. I don't currently have a job but if I do decide to work then it'll likely be in Florida. If it's going to cause a nightmare situation with immigration then he'll turn down the promotion. :(

It can't be that much of a unique situation, surely? It works for "snowbirds"...

Last time we checked, DC, WV, and FL were part of the same country. There shouldn't be any problem.

Many people also work in Canada but they live in America. They cross over everyday. Which is pretty cool. To live in America. Earn in Canada or vice versa.

I guess our biggest concern was that his paychecks and work info will all be from DC and if I work then my work stuff would be from Florida. We were worried it'd look like we were living apart when we won't be at all.

It won't be a problem. I once had a job that was based on New Jersey, and I never once went to the offices there. Right now, I have a job that has offices based all over the country, but all the paychecks and such come from Mass. It's very typical, and it shouldn't raise an issue at all.
