Yes you need a compliance letter from the manufacturer. It can cost a lot or a little. You need to go to the dealership to get one generally. They need your insurance your VIN number your DL and your proof of ownership card. They also ask the KLM of the car as well.

I have my original bill of sale, does that count for anything?

hmm probably towards proof of ownership.

My car was a ford, it cost me 140$ for my compliance letter. When you get to the border tell them your importing your car and they draw up some papers and you signem, they will give you copys to give to the DMV/registrar for your state when you go to get your state plates.

POE charges 6$ USD for your I-94.

As long as your car complies with safety standards I dont think the miles really matter on it unless they bring something against the safety of the car in some way. If you dont meet the compliance for USA sometimes its fairly easy to get things fixed so that it does comply.

Did you have any problems with safety standards for your Ford? My Cavalier is a 2001. How do you go about finding out if your vehicle fits the safety standards? Sorry for all these questions but I'm a bit concerned about this when I get to the POE

And for those of you that have a car where the dealership is no longer around, you can call any dealership to find out if there is a place for like antique car certifications. I can't remember exactly what they called the place, but it's who I had to call in regards to a Saturn.

And regarding how you find out if it fits the safety standards:

You register for the compliance letter.

I believe they will let you know if it does not meet the requirements.

yea when you go for the letter they will issue it or not, if its not compliant they dont give you a compliance letter and tell you what needs to be changed. My ford is a 2008 it has day time running lights and had 17,000 ish for klm they said daytime run lights arent a problem anymore tho because most american cars have them now.
