You can notify USPS about your address change.

You can also notify USCIS by phone call about your address change.

ANOTHER WAY:

You can ask USPS to hold your mails for 1 month or so. So once you go there it will be definitely in your mail with post office - safe and secure.

usps will not forward mail from uscis - there's a notice on the outside of the envelope that says 'do not forward' - so if you are thinking to use the 'normal' usps forwarding service - it's not going to work with the green card mailer, at all.

I must assume you have NOT gone through the POE, yet - so

when you are AT the POE, you MUST update your address THEN - that's the 'fastest way' to do it, as the CBP goons have computer access to 'change the address' in near-real-time.

IF this 'current address' - is some one you know, then you really should have THEM accept it , then forward it to you by a manual remail (put in new envelope, put postage on the outside, put the new address on outside) as it's really f'ing difficult to get the address changed, properly, once you are PAST the POE.

Sure, you can send in a form, but there's a huge 'data disconnect' between USCIS-London KY office - that manages the addresses and data, and the facility that prints and mails the green card - that facility NEVER hits USCSI-London KY's databases to hunt for current address.

So - you should be able to overcome this problem, by giving the new address to CBP goon at the POE. Don't expect them to ask for it - you should TELL THEM, instead.

Another way to 'overcome' this problem - is to have the postal service HOLD the mail, without any 'forward ' instructions.

Good Luck !

The green cards aren't supposed to be forwarded. That being said they sometimes do get forwarded if the local post office doesn't pay attention to the instructions on the green card envelope. If it gets returned you MAY have to pay the fee for replacement.

Changing address by phone is not the proper method. You could ask the CBP officer at the POE to make the change in the system, but there is no guarantee.

Having the mail held at the current post office may be the safest course of action.

Hi,

I may be moving within a week or two of POE. Will the GC be forwarded to my new address with all my other mail, provided I fill out the correct postal forwarding card? Thanks.

YOU can move where ever you want to... no restrictions.. About the green card... that's important. You can Notify the Postal Sevice that you have moved via their "change of address form" but sometimes they seem to mess up. The person running the main on their "normal" route maybe off from work that day and the finn-in driver might deliver the mail.

Typically they will put a "yellow" sticker to forward your mail when it gets to the LOCAL post office. You might want to file the form AR-11 ACOA and call uscis so they can submit some kinda notification to the facility that does that card production so the NEW mailing address will be in their system. At the point of Entry you can update them with the new address .. if you know the address.

IF the place you will stay after you enter the usa is a close friend/family house and you trust em.. then you can keep the address the same and the card me mailed to you. The same way how people would travel here and leave in a week or 2 and the GC be mailed to them. They typically have the Temp. Evidence Stamp in the Passpost so they'll have no problem to travel for a while.

1) Inform the officer at POE

2) Hold at current post office

USCIS mails will NOT be forwarded. Even at my previous address (apartment), they didn't deliver the NOA1, 2 years back since my name was not written on the post box. I called USCIS many times to send another NOA1 and finally they did.

Thanks for all the replies. The keyword here was "MAY" be moving, in other words we may or may not move, so updating the address at POE won't be an option, because if we *don't* move then we'll obviously have a problem. Seems the best option for us will be to let the GC come to our current address and let our relative there manually forward it to us.
