Police make 78 arrests in Melbourne blitz

From: AAP

September 12, 2010 11:29AM

POLICE made 78 arrests in Melbourne on Saturday night - the second night of a national crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

Almost 1000 police hit city streets and inner suburbs over the past two nights during Operation Unite, an Australian and New Zealand operation targeting alcohol misuse and licensed premises.

Last night the campaign resulted in police arresting 65 people for drunkenness in Melbourne and 13 people were arrested for assaults.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said this morning that the operation has been a success.

"We were able to demonstrate to people a strong police presence, we were vigilant in the way that we dealt with issues that came up," he said.

"Unfortunately we did arrest people for being drunk, that message is not totally getting through at this point in time."

As part of the operation, police also visited 401 licensed premises on the night and detected 43 licensing breaches.

Offences included premises serving under age patrons, drunk persons on premises, too many patrons in the premises and not meeting licence requirements.

On Friday night the operation resulted in 45 people arrested for drunkenness and nine for assault.

Police visited 286 licensed venues and issued 11 liquor licensing offences. When Operation Unite ran last December 12 and 13, Victoria Police arrested almost 400 people for drunkenness and 50 over assaults, when more than 800 extra police were sent to the streets of Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Bairnsdale and Frankston on Friday and Saturday nights.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

this is a 'low numbers' raid, BooYah!

What do you attribute these 'low numbers' to?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Well when homicides are almost non-existent, the police have to do something to stop the boredom.

Boredom by whom? The pub crawlers, or the police?

78 arrests in one night being intoxicated in public, in one city, with 13 for assault is high for them.

To put it in perspective, the equivalent of 39 people are murdered in the US every day.

They are arresting people for being drunk............in a bar?

When I was last there it seemed that everyone stayed drunk always.

Alcohol abuse is a major problem there. They appear to be a bunch of drunken malcontents from what I have seen.

Your perception is right but they were more of a drunken pansies from what I remember. The babes there loved that a real man was among them for once so I had it made.good.gif

I have read a few articles about the women there preferring foreign men. There was a report that British hikers found the Aussie women easy to bed. Must be due to the shortcoming of the Aussie men. They really sound like a bunch of wankers.

Very true. Any babe that I talked to complained about the men there and how they cared more for their beer than having sex. It was awesome how the babes were so attentive to me and any foreigner. Every babe there asked me to please get them in touch with someone back home.

They are a pathetic lot, aren't they? But they are happy. They just like booze more than sex.

Yes they are at that. If being more happy boozed up than having sex with a hot babe is your thing then the Aussie men are a happy lot.blink.gif

1000 officers went out, and this was all they could find.

I'm sorry, this is a non-event, not even newsworthy - I'm used to higher numbers in USA and China.
