National Anthem

  1. 1. Do you like a little creativity during the national anthem?

    • Yes. I think artists should be free to sing it how they want to, when they want to.
    • No. I'd like them to stick to a more traditional version for "official" events.

I'll come back if you want to talk about poker or something.

Yes, because watching poker is super exciting.

The person who should be complained about is the one that booked her.

Which is kind of where I'm going with this thread. I don't think artists should be prohibited from singing it their way, I just think something as traditional as NFL football should be more selective of "progressive" ways of doing it.

I think of it kind of like church service. I don't need a rock band and/or theatrical play to get through church. Pray, read a little, sing a little, pray a little more... let's go watch football. Many people nowadays want to see a "show" at church. I don't go to church for a show. Same as I don't tune in to the NFL pregame to see an artist's "personal" take on the anthem. I tune in so I can feel that pride in America right before I watch a perfect representation of what makes America what it is.

That's also why I watch the NASCAR prerace ceremonies. (They've also had a few poor choices recently, but for the most part, they keep it traditional.) Not only do they sing the anthem, but they pray first - and they always have a fly over.

America, F#@K YEAH!

I've heard God loves Nathan's hotdogs.

God has good taste.

Al Capella?

He's Capone's nephew.

It doesn't matter whether I like it or not. I can always use the mute button. But, it is wrong to stifle artistic expression. One can choose not to participate if that is not what one likes.

Agreed. However, what I'm getting at is when I choose to participate in the NFL pregame ceremonies I expect a certain level of "official" protocol. To me, when an artist "remixes" the anthem, that breaches protocol.

I'm not saying the artist is wrong for doing so and should be silenced, I'm saying NFL pregame is not the venue.

Flawed poll. Can't answer the question the way it is asked.

How would you ask it?

You are allowed three poll questions. I would have broken it up into three separate yes/no/unsure/don't care questions.

1) Do you like when artists....

2) Should artists generally be allowed....

3) For official, or quasi-official events, should.... (Although some definition may be needed, as I wouldn't call a sporting event "official", in the same sense as a government sponsored event.)

I worded it more for the appropriateness of the venue since I don't want to debate whether or not it should be allowed. I think it should be allowed (1st Amendment and all) and I think most others would agree. I actually liked it, I just didn't like it at the NFL kickoff game. On her album, sure. On American Idol, great. But for the pregame show of the first game of the season? Absolutely not.

What I wanted to gauge with this poll and thread is if others were with me and would like to see a more traditional version at "official" events (and I don't even want to debate what's official and what's not) or if they're open to seeing what we saw the other night.

For your questions above, the only one I'm really interested in is #3. I could care less what people like (there are plenty of numbers on that, I don't need a poll to determine what sells and what doesn't) and if they think it should be allowed (since it's always "allowed" by the constitution). I simply want to know folks' opinions on the appropriateness of the venue since that is up for debate.
