  1. 1. Do you like a little creativity during the national anthem?

    • Yes. I think artists should be free to sing it how they want to, when they want to.

I watched the NFL kickoff game last night and, to say the least, I wasn't impressed with Colbie Caillat's "interpretation" of the national anthem. Call me old fashioned, but I don't like it when artists "remix" our national anthem during an "official" part of an American institution. It's all well and good to do it at Woodstock, but I'd like to see them stick to a more traditional rendition at ball games. Thoughts?

For the record, I think it was beautiful... just wish folks would sing the anthem to honor America, not sell records. I prefer a Whitney Houston version over a Colbie Caillat version any day. I realize Whitney added herself to the song too, but it seems like she did so selflessly in an attempt to make it more wonderful, not to make it her own.

Anyone else have a similar reaction? I was watching it like, "What the hell is she doing?" and at the same time, they panned to a guy saying, "I can't take this. What the hell is she doing?" It was still a good song and the crowd seemed to like it - after all, it was the national anthem - but to me, and apparently a few others, this was the wrong venue for the "artistic interpretation" to be presented.

IMO it wasn't some crazy interpretation or something.

You can argue that the anthem should always be sung vanilla out of respect or tradition or what have you, but I think you take NFL games too seriously if you think they're not an appropriate venue for artistic interpretation if it is to be "allowed" at all.

You're probably right.

To me, the NFL is like God was looking down upon America one Sunday and said, "while I'm resting... play this game so I have something perfect to watch as I scarf down some pizza and throw back a couple of brewskies."

To me, the NFL IS America. To trifle with the tradition just doesn't seem right.

That is silly. Everyone knows America is a Nathan's kosher hot dog with the works and a soda. A game is a nice accompaniment but not necessary.

I've never had a Nathan's hot dog. There are a lot of folks in America like me who haven't had one.

I'm willing to bet there are far fewer who haven't seen a football game.

I have. I'm also a fan of competitive eating. I was born without the football gene though. I know there's artistry there somewhere, but for the life of me I cannot find it. For me it's a series of go, topple over, wait too long, go, topple over again.

My best (girl) friend is obsessed with football. Do. Not. Want. Seems like you get three minutes of interesting action for hours of bored frustration. There's no percentage in it. But I'm not here to jack your football happy. I'll come back if you want to talk about poker or something.

The National anthem is made to be sung Al Capella and so made to have interpretations. I have seen many people sing it in their own way and most were awesome. This babes interpretation was tame and uninspiring. The person who should be complained about is the one that booked her.

It doesn't matter whether I like it or not. I can always use the mute button. But, it is wrong to stifle artistic expression. One can choose not to participate if that is not what one likes.
