this might be a silly question... i am marrying my fiance soon who is here on a k1 visa

my question is after we file our i485, i131, and i765; and if they are all sent to the chicago lockbox address,

how do i know which office, suboffice, etc. to check for it's processing time?

we are nervous after a few delays and so much expense, i really want to keep an eye on it as much as possible and hope that we don't need any more expensive medical exams eek

Hi :

Congradulations for the newlywed.

Yes, if you apply all those 3 together, you can send them all to Chicago in one envolop.

Just make sure you label your different applications clearly. Cover letter with a list of your document will be nice.

Once they receive your envolop, they will give you a letter with receipt numbers for each application. You can check processing progress on USCIS website with the receipt numbers.

I keep poking around this site and it sounds like some I-485's get transferred to CSC, which really confuses me. If I understand your post above correctly, the USCIS National Benefits Center in Missouri is supposed to process the I-485 -- does it just sometimes transfer applications to CSC? What's the role of the District Offices then?

By the way, how do you all receive email updates regarding your cases? I did not see any fields on any of the AOS related applications that asked for my email address.

Thanks! Just to confirm, all local offices are just USCIS' district offices (not service centers), correct?

If the local offices don't process I-485's, why do they list processing times for those? Similarly, if the local offices don't process EAD and AP applications, why do they list processing times for them?

The receipt notice should come from the MSC, and you can use that to check the status of your case. You can use the USCIS site to check processing times of your local office, though they aren't always an accurate indication of what they are doing.

If you case gets sent to the CSC, that can be a good thing, because most of the times they issue an approval and GC without an interview.

K-1 Timeline

awesome thanks for all your help guys, we were really lucky to have found this site before starting all this...

just a quick note for anybody: we had some trouble with social security (even after doing everything right) so we contacted our congressman's office and they are now communicating w/ social security and homeland security for us; a good idea to let them know what's going on anyways, just thought that might be helpful
