At the toronto airport, CBP officer placed a stamp on my passport for one year temp residence and told me that I should be getting green card in the mail and allowed to work.

I went yesterday to social security office to apply for SSN so I can find work. they told me that now it is automatic, once i was entered US, the paper work which CBP did also inlclude application of SSN. So I should wait 5 weeks, if not received then shall apply. IS that true??? is that happen with somebody else as well???

How much time it takes to get green card in the mail????? any experience.

it depends. what visa did you file for? your timeline is blank so i can't really offer any advice :)

What you describe sounds like a cr-1? Usually it is automatic for them, and you get it shortly after you cross. But if your a k1 then you have to wait the 2weeks and then go in and fill out the ssn forms.

If you ticked "yes" on the DS-230II to the SSN qn then you should get one, I've never heard of being denied an early application but it's not the end of the world, I'd wait 2 weeks (typical mailing time) and then go in and apply or call to ask whether a number has been assigned to you yet.

Good luck

**moved from "AoS (Family)" to "CR-1" as this is a CR-1 qn, not an AOS qn**

The 'yes' on the DS-230 for the SSN is not automatic. Wait a few weeks and then try going to the SSN office. Lots of people wait and wait and wait and never get their SSN despite putting YES on their forms.

Depending on when you entered and on what type of visa, you may not be in the system yet as eligible for work

Good luck
