Can someone confirm for me please....

future husband just called from work to say tomorrow we have to go and get my social security number as its required for us to get married?

I flew into the country on the 16th of last month. My fiance has been reading up on everything required for our wedding next month and according to some website it says that I cannot be married until I get a social security number.

Its just another form to fill out and then I file it at the local Social security office...but I dont remember reading anywhere on this site that its required....????

odd I thought....

Does anyone have any further info on that...???

tar.

Different states have different regulations and waiting periods for getting married. Rather than continue to search online for your answer or worry about it, a quick trip to your local court can easily satisfy your question. You may even be able to call them up and ask them directly. Best wishes!

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

Might be a state-specific requirement. Inquire directly to your county office that handle marriage licenses to be sure.

Yes SSN is just a simple form and show up at the local SSN office.

It may not be required to get married but it is a good idea. You will not be able to get Your ssn till after your Adjustment Of Status is complete IF you don't get your SSN before you get married that is. Look the court house that you intend to get married at up and give them a call. Sometimes if you find there site it will say one thing but if you actually call someone they may have a way of doing it without. I know when I got married I emailed multiple places to see if a SSN was needed as they said so on the website however they said the you needed a SSN if you were a US citizen. SO give them a call and see what happens :P

Sorry for "hijacking" this thread, but I've been researching about getting my fiance a SSN, and I'm still kind of confused. And since Canadiangal mentioned something in this thread that I want to ask about, I thought it would be best to ask in this thread.

You will not be able to get Your ssn till after your Adjustment Of Status is complete IF you don't get your SSN before you get married that is.

So getting married without a SSN is not a good idea right? I mean, don't you need to show proof like a joint bank account at the AOS? And I don't think you can get a joint bank account without a SSN.

I just know my fiance should wait 2 weeks after arriving in the U.S. to apply for a SSN, at least that's what I read here in the guide lines, and it takes at least 2 weeks to receive the card in the mail after he applies for it. So that makes me afraid we'll have to wait a month or more to be able to get married since he should get his SSN card before getting married so we can do things like get a joint bank account before the AOS. Unless, do you get a number right when you apply, but it just takes 2 weeks to recieve the actual card in the mail? Honestly I don't remember. If that's the case I feel better that we can get married a bit faster then I thought. I don't want to wait too long to get married since that can complicate things if you wait too long.

When a US citizen applies for a marriage license they are required by federal law to provide their Social Security number - title 47, chapter 7, subchapter IV, part D, section 666(a)(13). Some people have referred to this as the "Mark of the Beast" law because it requires anyone applying for a professional license to provide their SSN, and also because it's section 666.

Anyway, this requirement does not apply to foreign nationals. A valid identification, such as a passport, should be all that's needed. Have your husband check again.

As of today you have 51 days to apply for a SSN. After that, you will have to wait until you receive your EAD or GC to be able to apply. I can tell you that is nigh on impossible to do anything in the US without that SSN. You can get married, though. :hehe: Please see The SSN Forum for further information.

So getting married without a SSN is not a good idea right? I mean, don't you need to show proof like a joint bank account at the AOS? And I don't think you can get a joint bank account without a SSN.

As others have said.... the beneficiary does not require an SSN to be married. Think of it this way.... when people visit the US for destination weddings, they are not required -- nor are they allowed -- to have a SSN to obtain a license.

Moving from K-1 Process to General Immigration Discussion.

I know the beneficiary does not need a SSN to get married. But the beneficiary can't apply for a SSN once he/she gets married until the AOS? How are you supposed to get a joint account for example for the AOS if the beneficiary didn't get a SSN before getting married? This doesn't seem to make sense to me to get married before the beneficiary gets a SSN.

Yes you can get the social security number after you marry. What is recommended is that you obtain it in your maiden name so there is no problem with a name match in the system, file the AOS paperwork under your married name (if you chose to change the name) then return to the social security office after receiving your EAD and changing the name on the card. The only restriction with obtaining a social security card is that it must be applied for so many days prior to the I-94 expiring.

So you can get your SSN after getting married but before the AOS? We don't have to worry about getting a new SSN card once the name changes, as my fiance's name isn't going to change, but mine will... ;) (I'm the woman and the USC. Of course I know I will have to get a SNN card once my name changes, but that will be no problem)
