turbo,

Your wife's place of residence does not indicate that the assistance of an immigration attorney is called for.

However, there may be any number of other factors associated with the case, or personal preferences on your part, that might indicate that retaining an attorney would be a good idea.

In any event a consultation with an attorney to explore the facts of the case, get some questions answered, and learn some tips, is always a good investment.

Ummm, you'd hire a lawyer in the U.S. to assist you if it were the case, not in China, unless there's something to your case that would make things complicated for your fiance in China. But you haven't given any details, so...

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

There is nothing magical about this process. Everything I had read indicated that with a bit of hard work and such people can do this process without an Attorney.

Now having said that I am using an Attorney. Why you may ask? Simple, my fiance speaks english very well but is more comfortable with Russian. She is making a huge change in her life and this whole process is very scary for her. So she found a law firm that had a Russian Lawyer as well as an Americian lawyer and we hired them. The cost was similar to the cost to many other firms. If this helps calm her down and make her feel better about the whole process than to me it is worth every penny.

Every one is different, everyone choses their own path. Pick it and be happy with it. You are both capable enough to do this on your own but sometimes it is not about capabilities but about piece of mind.

Good luck.

I would take a read through the guides above and if the process seems very clear to you and if you don't seem to have any "out-of-the-box" items in your case (things that aren't addressed in the guides) then you should be fine without a lawyer.

However, as Yodrak said, I think a smart move is to spend a few hundred dollars for a lawyer's time at the beginning of the process (to inform you of any roadblocks) and at the end of the process (to double check your pettition).

IF an attorney can make you feel more comfortable with the process... you might want to consider hire one. Other than that... I dont see it nesscary.
