Hello everyone ,

I have a question, I recently married my wife the end of last month.... I sent in the paperwork for the Adjustment of Status a couple of days later ... My question concerns my health insurance ... I work for the city of New York and would like to put her on my benefit plan. I was told by my payroll secretary that in order for me to put her on, I need her social security number. Is there a way that I can get a temporary social security number from the social security office near where I live? Is there anyway to speed the process of getting her number?

The reason why we need it soon is because she is having a problem with her tooth. I would really like to avoid having to pay out big money if she needs an extraction or replacement crown. It would cost at least a thousand :( ... of course I will do it if need be ... but if there was a way I can get that SS number soon it would be a great help.

If there is no way to get it sooner, how long should I expect to wait for them to issue her number?

Thanks so much for your time and information :)

Did she enter in US on a K1 visa? If she did you can visit the nearest SSS Office in your area, bring her passport and her I-194 which should still be valid meaning within the 90 days that she entered US and bring your marriage certificate and apply for a SSN. I applied for SSN a week after I arrived US on a K1 visa on my maiden name. I will change the name later once I get my GC. There is no temporary SSN, once your wife will be issued an SSN that will be her SSN forever.

Thank you for your response ... unfortunately, her I - 94 expired two days ago ... but we do have the marriage certificate ... yes, I heard that we should have applied for the SSN after she came June ... but I heard this when it was too late ... I guess I will try anyway and see what they say ... I also heard they aren't the nicest of people that work there LOL ... but anyway, do you know if I have any other options as of now?

Thanks again for your help :)

If the I-94 is expired you are wasting your time going to the SSA office. Will need to wait for the EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to apply for the SSN.
