FYI: Need input and reassurance (St. Luke’s sputum culture)

This is a most difficult question to want to ask, and, one I’m not certain I want to feel the reality of the answer. Nevertheless, like so many others on this forum, my fiancée has undergone a sputum test after they found a spot on her x-ray. September the 9th, which will be tomorrow morning for those in the Philippines, will be our last day of the culture. Like others have done, I attempted to call St. Luke’s to get a heads up on the results. The first time I called the lady informed me that we could get the results tomorrow, on September the 9th. I then attempted to use a little psychology by asking, “Will she be able to get her clearance and immunization shots before the elected day of the official results. In this manner they are not actually telling you have passed, but “wink, wink” they are telling you that the results were negative. Are official day to receive notification was not to be until September 14th. Obviously, you could tell that she is not allowed to give out results over the phone, either good or bad. Since I did not get the answer to the results, I did what any other crazy person would do, I called back.

Yet, another person answered the phone and he was very polite. He checked the name I gave him, and then kindly stated that there were no results as of yet, but they should be out tomorrow. Still not fully satisfied I called again. On all three calls I was fortunate enough to get three different people. Again, this person stated that the results would be available tomorrow. As I continued with diplomacy to press the issue so ever slightly, again attempting a bit of psychology, she stated twice that my fiancée could get her results tomorrow, and soon after get her she could get clearance papers and immunization shots. The question I formulate here is one that has been asked before, and many have received mixed results. My first question is, “since they did not call you during any phase of the culture, how much can you rely upon the fact that your results will be negative?” I had read a sad experience on the forum that one couple waited until the last day to only find out that his fiancée was positive. “How often do they monitor these cultures to see if they have become positive?” Surely, you would think that they would not knowingly want people walking around with active TB, right? Although, we will most likely get our results tomorrow, I would appreciate any input regarding these particulars. While reading many accounts on the forum concerning this issue, I have heard several scenarios, some good and some very sad. Nevertheless, as always I thank each and every one of you that takes time out of their day to assist me in my time of need.

Yes, as of September the 9th, this will be her completed timeframe of the two month culture. As I understand, they look at the “Sputum” under the microscope within the first three days. Her first “Three” day test, after the three day period of the “Sputum” was negative. Then as you are aware of, you have to undergo the 8 week culture, in which she has done. So, in summary, we will get her 8 week result tomorrow, where it will be September the 9th in the Philippines. I’m just very nervous regarding the procedure and looking for further input. Better put, I’ve been going crazy thinking about the possibilities. However, I’m doing my best to remain calm and faithful. Thanks for your reply, and hopefully you or someone can give me additional input.

Please try not to worry too much about the TB culture. More than 50,000 people pass through St. Lukes every year and, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (who tracks the St. Lukes TB statistics), less than one percent actually have TB.

Good luck to you, condz!:star:
