Hello everyone,

We want to take a trip back to my wifes home country for a weeding, her citizens test is next week. Do they send new citizens a passport or do we have to wait for a paper and than go and apply for one.

thanks

You get a certificate of citizenship at the ceremony - not at the interview.

The ceremony might be same day as the interview or a month or two later - it differs by office

You can take the certificate to a post office that handles passports and apply the same day as you get the certificate

If you pay extra it will be 2 weeks - otherwise 4 to 6 weeks

Get a color photo copy of the certificate before you mail it - they take the original and return it in 2 weeks

Its all here >>

Good luck to your wife on her test. When she passes her test and interview she will be scheduled in for an oath ceremony. In some cities they do a same day oath ceremony if the interviews are held early enough in the day. In other cases she will either be given an available date within the next two weeks and asked if she is interested in attending or else she will be sent an oath date in the mail.

After the interview but before the oath ceremony she is still a landed immigrant and still has her green card. She can travel on her green card without a problem while waiting for the oath ceremony. Once she has the oath ceremony she turns in her green card and receives her citizenship document. Once she becomes a US citizen she requires a US passport to travel back into the US (she may still be able to use her first country's passport to travel out of the US if her country recognizes dual citizenship, but she can't use it to travel back to the US.)

To get a US passport she needs to go to a Passport office or a US Post Office and submit a completed passport application form, two passport photographs and her US Naturalization Certificate. All of those will be mailed off to the US Passport Center where they will produce her passport and mail it back to her. They will also mail back the certificate but in a separate envelope. It normally takes about a month to 6 weeks to get a passport right now, but if you pay extra you can get an expedited passport in about 2 to 3 weeks.

If your wife's travel plans don't allow enough time to obtain a passport, she can tell them at the interview that she would like to do her oath ceremony after her return and they will not schedule her until she gets back in the country. That way she can travel on her green card and not have to worry about whether the US passport will arrive in time.

Getting a US passport doesn't happen automatically. You do have to apply for it. You can find out more information about getting a US passport here: http://travel.state....sport_1738.html

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
