I'm not sure if i should post this question here in this forum or "adjustment of status".

I'm trying it here. Thanks for any information.

My mother passed the interview (IR-5) in June. She is coming to New York City next Tuesday on her immigrant visa. I understand that she will need to give the immigrant documents' package to the customs at the airport.

My question:

1. Do we need to fill out any paperwork after she arrives and send to USCIS in order to apply for her green card? Or the green card will be sent to our residence address directly without submitting any other documents?

2. How long will it take to receive the green card?

3. Can we go to apply for her SSN with her passport only without receiving green card? Any other document or proof shall we provide to apply for my Mom's SSN? Like my US passport?

1. No - just make sure the address is correct at CBP on POE day.

2. 2 to 8 weeks. She'll receive a stamp in her passport on POE day, that validates the IR-5 visa to be used as a temporary green card, up to 1 year. Usually, the green card will arrive within that 1 year, but she's 'covered' on documents, with just her passport (which has the visa stamp from guangzhou, and the I-551 stamp from the POE).

3. Yup, absolutely ! Bring the passport, a birth certificate, and yer Mum - go in to SSA office 2 weeks after POE date. Ask the clerk to look up yer Mum in the SAVE database, using her VISA NAME and/or A#. If any problem, if not found in SAVE - do not hang about, do not go forward, do not allow for 'DHS/USCIS Electronic Verification' to occur, as it will take weeks - just simply come back 1 week later - she'll be found in the SAVE database after that time.

---

YOUR passport is not needed - it's yer Mother's documents, that are needed, for SSN issuance.

Good Luck ! (and let us know what you are cooking, soonish, la)

If you checked the Social Security box in her DS-230 form, then the SS Administration should be sending her SS card in the mail as well.

Before you make a trip to their office you need to make sure that the USCIS has entered all of her info in their system. If not, then the SSA office won't be able to find her and won't be issuing her a SS number.

I know of no way to do this, over the phone.

I know of no way to do this, over the phone.

That's how I did it for my husband. I called the USCIS' 800 number, told them they had entered with a CR1 visa and they transferred me to a "special" group who were able to see if his info was entered in the system.
