With so much money flying around in college football and basketball, the universities are taking advantage of those kids, Everybody knows through Alumni and other kinda of backdoor dealing they try to reward or sway the athlete to Join their organisation, instead of all the backdoor dealings why not making it all LEGIT.

Or to the very least use more of that $$$ to increase the amount of scholarship they give out, instead of filling out coaches and administrator pockets.

Sources: Trust to take Bush’s Heisman

The Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to strip former University of Southern California star running back Reggie Bush of college football’s top honor by the end of September, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Bush would become the first player in the 75-year history of the award to have the trophy taken away. The NCAA found major violations in the Trojans’ football program in June and levied serious sanctions against the school.

Two sources close to the Heisman trust said the body’s investigation is coming to a close, and will ultimately concur with the NCAA’s determination that Bush was ineligible during his Heisman-winning season in 2005. Because of that independent conclusion, sources said the trust will relieve Bush of the award and leave the honor for that season vacant. The sources said Bush met with Heisman representatives last month at the New York law offices of Emmet, Marvin & Martin. The sources would not reveal details of that meeting.

It appears as if the Heisman Trophy Trust is about to strip Reggie Bush of his 2005 trophy.

Bush, now a standout with the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Heisman trust has been conducting its own independent inquiry into Bush’s eligibility since the NCAA ruled in June that the USC star had committed multiple violations by accepting cash, gifts and other impermissible benefits while playing for the Trojans. Yahoo! Sports first detailed the extra benefits in September 2006. In its findings, the NCAA retroactively ruled Bush ineligible for part of the 2004 season and all of 2005. The NCAA also ordered the USC program to remove all references to Bush from its sporting venues and promotional materials and vacate his statistics from all games in which he was ineligible.

In July, incoming USC president C.L. Max Nikias announced that the university would be returning its copy of Bush’s Heisman to the trust, stating the Trojans would honor and respect athletes who “did not compromise their athletic program or the opportunities of future USC student-athletes.” New USC athletic director Pat Haden followed up in August, stating during an interview with the Dan Patrick radio show that Bush should also voluntarily return his Heisman.

While others pressed for a swift decision, the trust opted for a patient, meticulous effort. Sources said the trust did its own detailed investigation over the past three months, using a litany of resources and reviewing its information against the NCAA’s findings. The trust also offered Bush a chance to impact the decision.

The process apparently came with considerable debate – in part because of the trust’s quest for due process, but also because of the unique nature of the decision. Never in the history of the award has the trust been forced to retroactively rule on the eligibility of a past winner. That reality, along with the NCAA’s findings, created a tangled knot of deliberation regarding the trust’s place in the role of enforcement. Sources said the prominent issues discussed included accountability, on-field vs. off-field conduct, implications of retroactively stripping an award and possible impact on future athletes and the NCAA.

Two factors outweighed all others, sources said: The Heisman ballot necessitates candidates be in compliance with NCAA bylaws and concern over the Heisman’s reputation in the wake of the NCAA findings against Bush.

The status of USC’s 2004 Bowl Championship Series national title remains to be determined. BCS officials are awaiting the NCAA’s ruling on the Trojans’ appeal of the June finding.

sports at College __CAN BE__ a huge money making opportunity for any college, with the proper marketing push.

It's up to 'that college' to decide where the revenue goes, ultimately, but

If tuition, fees, books, board (both dorm and meals) are covered, remind me again WHY the athelete needs money?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

As someone who was a collegiate athlete, the current system is horrible. You aren't even allowed to get a job other than work study to supplement the small handout you get from the university. Depending on where you go to school, you're stuck living on campus housing with the freshmen unless your parents can afford to pay your rent for an off campus apartment.

The worst part is, the university retains the rights in perpetuity for your name, likeness for marketing and licensing. In effect, the university gets all the money from things like EA Sports video games, and the athlete gets squat.

That's my point, the university is taking advantage of those kids, and do all kind of under the table dealing, you only hear about the cases when they get caught, but how much of it is going on through Alumini and other 3rd parties the universities would use to convince one way or another a prospective player to join them.

If they are getting all these financial rewards from the player, why not at least get the player a Stipens, or increase the amount of scholarship they give out,

at least it's done out wide in the open, that would create more transparency to the system.

As someone who tutored the collegiate athletes and lived with several, I think the athletes as a whole are being spoiled brats. You get full room and board and (paid, in-state) tuition, fees, and books (and supplies via the Athletics Department), insurance, free access to the athletics facilities and tutors. Where I'm getting my graduate degree, this totals roughly $40k/year, plus however much tutoring costs. At my alma mater, where I worked as a tutor 20hrs/wk), I got paid $75/class/week (which worked out to $15/hr, twice what tutoring services pays the non-athlete tutors, incidentally), and most athletes got 2-3 tutors, so $150-225/wk (or an extra $7200/year). So when you tally all of what they're getting, they're paid $47k/yr and told they're allowed to get work study (which, when I was an undergrad, paid $10-20/hr). And in exchange, they play their sport, the university is granted rights for licensing and what not. And university housing these days is NOT the 4 to a room, floor of people sharing a bathroom standard of days old. Most universities have furnished apartments available to everyone, rooms with semi-private bathrooms, etc. Most have nice facilities for food. If they're working their work study job, they're pulling in $200+/wk on top of not having to pay a dime for anything else -- to pay for clothes, meals out, social activities, etc. It may no be bank, but it's not at all a bad life, and most college athletes aren't important enough to be put in video games or what not. (Those that are inevitably end up in the pros and make their own bank for the licensing fees.)

I think the waaaambulance needs to be called here. "OH NO I ONLY GOT $150K AND A GOOD EDUCATION THAT I CAN LEVERAGE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, IN EXCHANGE FOR THEM BEING ABLE TO USE MY FACE AND NAME IN PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL FOR A LIMITED TIME (and maybe, if I/my team was awesome and played one of a SMALL handful of the sports, a video game)" (...but wait, video games for college sports are not exactly common and are limited only towards men's sports, so it wouldn't've even been applicable to roughly half of the athlete-scholars.. and then when you consider that of all the various college sports that give full rides, only TWO get made into video games - men's football and men's basketball.)
