They have come in their hundreds of thousands, all devout, converging on one of the world's holiest places.

This was the scene at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the birthplace of Islam, yesterday as Muslims around the world celebrated Ramadan.

The Grand Mosque houses the Kaaba, the most holy place in Islam, a square-shaped building that predates the religion itself. It is the Kaaba that Muslims around the world are facing when they pray towards Mecca.

Someone's a bit hypersensitive. I thought the same thing when I saw the pictures. I find devotion to some fictional character a frightening, regardless of what fictional character it is.

saying disgusting things then back-pedaling doesnt make your hands clean.

I never "backpedal" - you should know that by now. If I wanted someone to bomb the place, I would have said so.

The place actually looks quite pretty and I don't want to see it bombed any more than you do.

However, if some nut decided to bomb the place, imagine the consequences. People were killed over silly cartoons.

does that mean we'll be taking over the world soon? you know, seeing as how there are so many and all are terrorists..... :P

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

The fourth and fifth pictures remind me of Native American bead work

On of the funniest politically incorrect things I heard on the radio (probably one of the reasons I will be on the express train to the hot place) was when KFI radio did a spoof of a traffic reporter (guy talking with stereotype Arab accent) describing the congestion of people at Mecca in traffic terms. Stuff like a guy lost a sandal and there is a major pile-up. Very insensitive for sure given the many deaths that occur. KFI got in pretty big trouble for it as well.

Correction: Mecca is not the birthplace of Islam. That would be the Garden of Eden. BTW, before Muslims were directed to pray toward Mecca, they prayed toward Jerusalem.

Sofiyya, what exactly is the Kaaba, whats in it and what is it's significance?
