you are working her to death man!! lol I guess if she's happy thenthat's the most important thing.

I dont know about other Thai - I didnt get to work with Thai people that much so I cant say - I know about my friends though that they used to have that mentality that they can change time on a whim and the manager will be ok with it.. they pretty much changed that attitude quickly after work here for a while. I never understand that concept anyway, I'm too concious about my commitment to other people and their trouble if I would to do that (self important much? lol) I'm lucky that I am now woking for a very flexible manager and co-worker!!

{working her to death} - it would have been MY death if she didn't find a job and she was totally motivated to do that without my input.

I would have wanted her to get the drivers license first but she had to get work and she found 2 PT jobs 2 months after AOS date.

As far as the long hours - she may be getting only a few bucks above minimum wage here but it will turn out to be more than

she was getting from the Ministry of Education after 26 years. She won't pay for any living expenses and will get to keep 100%

of that. I even pay for her transportation to & from work. This way it's a win/win situation for both of us. I take care of 100% of

her expenses (not just the basics but everything) and she gets to keep a nice bit of change.

When she was working at a high school in Thailand, she didn't only have to be there during school hours but often had to

give up huge chunks of her "vacation time" to be at day-long meetings (sometimes with Buddhist monks for inspirational

lectures) at the school, or whenever the whim of the director demanded it. I know because I was also present at many

of those meetings on my numerous visits to Thailand. In addition to all of this, teachers had to do "weekend duty" at

the school (monitor/police the grounds during off-hours) several times a month.

She likes the idea that in the US, you get a salary for all the time you spend at work and there are fewer

Thailand-style "givebacks". The number of hours she would spend working for the school (even at home

late at night) were WAY in excess of 60 hours a week. Working 50 hours a week is nothing for her.

Her 2 PT jobs are contrasts in style:

1) food retail - most of her co-workers are older and more experienced,

the place is run like clockwork and she comes & goes as scheduled.

They have been giving her hours mostly in the morning & early afternoon.

2) clothing retail - most of her co-workers are young & inexperienced,

including the managers. The place is very busy, very hip but it's like

being in the middle of a cyclone. It pays more and they often ask her

to give more hours to help tidy up the place. They have been giving her

hours mostly in the afternoon-evening but more seldom in the morning.

Only time will tell which one she likes more; it's good to be able to have

a choice.

Does anybody have an idea when they would be likely to offer her full time?

3-6 months? My brother said she should ask for an evaluation after 3 months

as preparation for asking when a raise would be on the horizon.

Western-style delis are not usual shopping venues for Thai houswives,

but my wife has found a job in a major supermarket. Learning all

the Italian names for the cold cuts has been an uphill task.

Most of the time it's great, but one irate customer was screaming bloody

hell when she asked him to repeat his order. Her supervisor & manager

tried to calm the situation but said she was not at fault.

The supervisor got so pissed she started kicking objects behind

the counter in frustration. Smile at the customer, but take it out

on the furniure... :o
