Is it better to have the medical in US or in Vietnam?

I will be getting married in Vietnam. I was wondering, is it better to have the medical done here, or in Vietnam. My concern is that if I get it done here, will there be any issues with the Justice Department accepting the medical from the US? This will be in Khanh Hoa Province (Nha Trang). I'd rather get it done in the states, costs a little more, but it can save a little time. I just don't want to do it here, go there and submit it, and they say, sorry, the medical from the US is no good.

Also, what does the medical entail? From the form on the Vietnamese Consulate website, it basically asks about your mental status only.

Medical Certificate (bilingual form attached).Issued by an authorized medical organization confirming that the applicant has no mental illnesses, or has a mental problem but not to the extent of losing consciousness of his/her own actions.

I had a Psychiatrist do a mental evaluation. They just talk with you and ask a few question. You might have to take a test. Make sure the Dr. signature gets notarized. I had to take 2 because the first Dr. I went to was an a-hole and wouldn't get it notarized.

I also had the medical done in the US but ended up having to re-do it in Vietnam since they wouldn't accept it. No problem for me though as I felt more complete knowing I had done and in my hand as instructed to the "checklist". The medical in the US was done my physician; I explained what I needed it for and he was happy to oblige. The medical in VN was a series of questions, nothing hard. Funny man the doctor was... :) No appointment necessary for the VN medical and I was able to get it done and filed the same day with the Justice Center along with my marriage docs.

Medical exam, and psychiatrist done in US only accepts in VN if he/she(the doctor) working in the hospital. I did mine in US, and I have to get it done again in VN. This is what their took me.

From my experience I have heard of VERY few people (actually none) that have done the medical in the US and then not had to have it redone in Vietnam. I say very few meaning I have heard stories of a friend of a friend got it done and they accepted it, but no first hand statements. We went without a service, and they wanted a 200,000 dong “under the table fee” there was no way around it, and then they simply asked me who the president of the United States was and then he passed it. They seem to somewhat demand the under the table fee, maybe that is why I only had one question, and maybe that is why I got the doctor I got and not the other one. But as others have said, it is usually just a few questions, like have you had any recent or past head injuries, and other typical questions to check your sanity. You can also get the papers back the same day, when you pay you just have to pay a bit more and in a few hours they are ready for you to take. Good luck Jerome

I had mine done in the states then had it notarized and then had the notary authenticated by the secretary of the state, then I hand delivered it to the Vietnamese embassy in SF for translation. That was a little over 2 years ago so maybe things have changed.
