Emmy nominations 2010: Tony Shalhoub leads only four minorities nominated in major categories

The Emmy awards have a lot of "Glee," but not much color.

A total of four minorities were nominated in the major categories of the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Thursday, only one of them in one of the top four categories.

Lebanese actor Tony Shalhoub returned for the eighth consecutive year to be nominated for best actor in a comedy series for "Monk." The 56-year-old actor has won the same award three times (2003, 2005 and 2006).

Another Emmys mainstay, Andre Braugher, was nominated for best supporting actor for his role in "Men of a Certain Age." The African-American star has won two Emmys in the past, one for "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1998 and for FX's "Thief" in 2006.

As for the female minorities, Archie Panjabi, the saucy law-bending investigator in "The Good Wife," was nominated for best supporting actress. The British-born Panjabi is a Sikh from Britain.

Columbian actress Sofia Vergara was also nominated for best supporting actress for her role in "Modern Family," alongside co-star Julie Bowen.

Conspicuously absent from the list was the mostly African-American cast and crew of "Treme," David Simon's new series about musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans.

The snub didn't come as a shock considering Simon's previous critically-acclaimed series, "The Wire," which also boasted a mostly African-American cast, only earned two nominations during its six-year-run.

According to Variety, since 1986, non-white actors have received only 53 nominations out of nearly 1000 in the top four acting categories for drama and comedy. Only eight have ever won.

In 2007, America Ferrera became the first Latina actress to be nominated as lead actress in a comedy series for "Ugly Betty." When she won, it was the first time an Hispanic actress took home an acting Emmy since Rita Moreno in 1978 for "The Rockford Files."

Other minorities who have won include Hector Elizondo in 1997 for "Chicago Hope," Mary Alice in 1993 for "I'll Fly Away," James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair in 1991 for "Gabriel's Fire," Jimmy Smits in 1990 for "L.A. Law" and Jackee Harry in 1987 for "227."

The article is interesting. Your typically hackneyed commentary is not.

Your observations are not only unavoidable... but lacking in the answer to the question.

SHould there be a quota system to insure Emmy awards go to a more racially diverse crowd?

Why are they exempt?
