Best places to get translations that arent $39 a page?

My Spanish is not eloquent by any means, but it is effective (to an extent). I'm tempted to do the translations myself, but I can see where USCIS wouldn't like that very much. I think I could do it well, but if USCIS tests my Spanish for some reason, well, I cannot speak fluently. Just enough to get around, tell a story, small talk etc. I've done some research online, some places charging up to $39 PER PAGE, then slapping you with obviously inflated shipping charges to add insult to injury I have about 10 pages that need to be translated, and would prefer not to spend $390 on them. Does anyone know of a good reliable translation service that is reasonably priced?

Another thing I thought of, is that I live in an area with a lot of Spanish/English bilingual people. I'm almost tempted to post an ad on craigslist or a local spot looking for someone who is fluent and conversant in both Spanish and English. If I could get out of this spending no more than $100, I'd be satisfied. It's annoying knowing that I understand the documents and could translate the gist of them well, I just can't speak fluently and without the random 'aahh,'s and 'eeeeh's between words. Heh.

You can not do it by yourself anyways. The translations should be made by a legal translator, a person with a license to do it. It's better to spend the necessary and avoid the situation that they reject your documents, or request for additional information or evidence.. So, find out buddy and you'll have a happy and fast process.

I translated myself as well!! No problems. By the way why don't you ask a friend or family member that is fluent on both languages help you out!! Mucha suerte!!!

This is incorrect... You CAN do it yourself if you are competent in both languages and sign a statement that you are...

You can use an online translator like babelfish.yahoo.com to help you along or you can contact a local university and speak to someone in their foreign language department. I did that and it was great, I talked to a lady that chaged me $45.00 for everything (about 10 pages) and she also sent a letter on university letter head stating that she was qualified to translate the documents. I don't speak Spanish. My husband speaks both Spanish and English but we wanted our documents to be translated by a third party. We had everything done in Peru. It was much cheaper and was very professional looking. We had his high school records translated in the United States and it was significantly more although we did use someone who was a member of the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters. You could offer a College kid or a Spanish teacher to translate it for a more acceptable price.

Which is why you add a statement at the bottom "certifying" your translation by stating that the translation is accurate and that you are competent to translate. (as mentioned by a previous poster). You can get your signature on the statement notarized if you like. I did all our translations myself as well.

When i needed certified translation made by an aofficial one, here in peru was crazy expensive!!!!!! they cahrge me per page and a docuemnt that have only one page (my husband birth certified) comes in 3! how ????! they charge u per page and each page have to content only a certain amount of words..... but my husband did the translations for all the paper word that we need here in NVC /ISCIS there and wasnt that expensive....

Now if you can do it by yourself...go ahead!!! why to spend money in something that you can do alone! now if you need help with spanish I can help you ...

Let me ask to my husband (when he answer his phone) where he did the translations....I remember he mention he fax the paper and then just go to pick things up

Thanks for all the helpful responses guys and gals! Im going to go ahead and do the translations myself. I can translate the documents and am confident in my ability to do so (with minimal assistance from dictionary.com translator), Im just concerned that if i certify that I am "fluent" in Spanish and if they test my Spanish for some reason, Id have a problem because Im not fluent. I am most certainly competent to translate written text, but Im not fluent or conversant. Maybe Im just being a worry wart? Hahaha

no need to say "fluent", just say "competent to translate". I've never heard of them testing anyone who provided translations - as long as they don't find any errors in your translations you should be fine!
