I never alerted Canada about my marital status and new last name. They know I have moved to the USA (and then were quick to collect GST money from me) but they still recognize me as my maiden name. Should I let them know I am now married and let them know my new last name? If yes, how do I go about doing this? My gosh I am soooo tired of paperwork.

if that link doesnt work click on http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/eservices/tax/ind...unt/menu-e.html then click on "Log onto my account" and then you can create a new 1!! To set it up at first I think you wil require last yrs tax info, you need a figure from one of the lines, it states what is required!!

My not help with your changing of name, but you can change your addy on it, plus check out past yrs income tax info. There are other services as well. http://www.gc.ca/form/e-servicesother_e.html Cheers, Scott

Forgot to mention the above links work best with Internet Explorer.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

if you want your married name put into your passport, you'll have to send your passport and a copy of your marriage certificate to the passport office. Don't plan any trips for a while after you send it.

You can also have your married name put onto your SIN card, check their website for the name change form, and then you can send that in with a copy of your marriage certificate.

That's probably all you'll need.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Really, you have to notify the CDN government...

All I did was get my name changing in my passport..

I didn't do anything else, I still have a current BC drivers license in my maiden name and

just use my parents addy for it..

I guess I am just too lazy to do anything else.

I just filed my last tax return for the 2004 year and that was that!

Cheers,

Leanne

I didn't bother changing it on things in Canada. When I feel safe in relinquishing my passport for a name change, I will (it doesn't expire until 2009 or so). Until then, I correspond in my maiden name, and provide proof of marital status when and where necessary. The only thing I changed was the name on my last credit card there - I added my husband to it for when we travel to Canada.

The government in Canada doesn't care what name I'm using, as long as they have a way to contact me and that they've been informed via the bank that I'm a non-resident for taxation purposes. ;)

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

Ok so its not a requirement then. I was just gonna change mine name in my passport after my AOS interview and keep it at that. If I dont have to, I am not gonna bother.

Merci beaucoup for the responses :)

They allow you to make a name change over the phone if it's because of marriage. I just called them and told them my married name and it was changed. I also recieved a GST check which they have yet to collect, but when I called to update their personal info, they had me fax them a copy of my marriage certificate. Everything is in my married name now...just sent my passport last week and they called me to get credit card info and said I should have it really fast, since it is not an entirely new passport just the addition of my married name.
