If you are outside the US for less than six months then CBP will usually not question whether you've abandoned your residency. Between six months and one year they may question you about your circumstances to determine if you might have abandoned your residency. After one year they will presume you've abandoned your residency unless you applied for a reentry permit before you left or obtained a returning resident visa at a US consulate abroad. After two years you've abandoned your residency, but may be able to obtain a returning resident visa at a US consulate.
