Hello,

Does anyone know if you have to give up your Health Insurance in Canada while on a K-3? It's a non-immigrant visa so that would mean i'm still a resident of Canada, correct? Also, I'm expecting so will I be able to collect EI Maternity while on a K-3? Information is much appreciated!!!

If you are not paying CDN taxes/nor for medical, then you don't get CDN health insurance as you

are no longer a permanent residence of CDN.

Plus, you have to be working in order to get the EI with Mat leave..

EI=Employment Insurance..

I know, US mat leave sucks compared to CDN and I am still trying to get over that fact..

Cheers!@

http://www100.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/ae-ei/dem-ap...lish/home2.html Don't know the answer, but you could always call them and ask, you may get a correct response and you may not, lol!! One can get EI in the States, but you have to be abale to work and have enough qualified hours working back in Canada, not sure how maternity works, but I thought I recalled another receiving it in the USA, but I may be wrong!

You may have to call the ministry of health as well to see when ur health benefits cease, some cease as soon as you leave the province, others may be longer. I do recall reading an article online this past summer where the BC government was paying millions of $$ each yr to non canadian residents and foreigners in medical excpenses bills at their hospitals and they were looking into stopping that. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'm still in Canada and currently working. I'm still waiting for for my k-3 to enter. I will have enough hours for maternity leave and I'm paying my medical. I'm just lost on why you have to give up everything on a non-immigrant visa. So that means I'm a resident of no where? Also, maternity you are not expected to work.. you don't even fill out forms. You apply then you recieve your benefits for one year. Any more info would be great since the 1800 numbers are pretty useless at times. Thanks

Contact your MPs office and ask one of his staff to find out the official answer to that. They have contacts that regular people don't have and should be able to find something definitive for you. Good luck!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
