My husband is a permanent resident. He just had his conditions lifted and now has his greencard. He is also a British citizen. He sent his passport to the embassy in D.C. over two weeks ago to be renewed because it had expired and we haven't heard anything back. Tonight, we found out that his mother died. (This is terrible timing, since our 6 week old son died 2 weeks ago. I don't know how much more we can take.) What can we do to get him back to England for the funeral?

Thank you. Our baby died unexpectedly of SIDS and his mother lost a long bout with cancer. My father also had a heart attack a week ago. It's been a lot of heartbreak.

We offer our sympathy for your substantial losses. You need to make contact with the British Embassy in Washington D.C. for an expedited passport renewal. Given your dire circumstances, they will likely issue the renewed passport on an immediate basis. The logistics, in terms of FEDEX priority overnight charges may be on you. At this stage, this will not matter.

All the best to you.

I really hope you get this sorted and I'm so sorry to hear of all your recent losses.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Thank you for your replies. So we're going to call the embassy in DC first thing Tuesday morning. If they have his passport there and can go ahead and overnight it back to us then we will schedule him a flight for Wednesday evening. If they don't then we will drive to Atlanta (our closest embassy) and try to get an emergency passport issued there and then just have him fly out of there. Does that sound about right?

UK Embassy DC is your best option.

I needed to travel internationally and had an expired passport. So I called my embassy (not british) and they issued me emergency travel document. I sent all the things they asked (2 pics, check, application) overnight and I also included a return envelope. I sent this overnight, they issued me travel document next day and mailed it the next day. I got it in 3-4 days. Probably its not the same for all embassies but similar.

And, also emergency travel document was only to leave the country, not to come back. So, your husband will probably need to apply for new passport in UK.

Sorry for you losses. Its heartbreaking
