Is it better to get the single status paper in the US or in VN?

My fiancee talked to a dich vu and they told her that it is better for me to get my single status paper at the US Consulate in TP.HCM because he said that they might not accept the single status paper from the US, or they might hassle us more. Is there any truth to this? This is in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province). I just want to keep the time in VN to a minimum. I thought that getting the single paper in the US could save a little time, but to me, either way is fine, though if one method is safer or better then it'd be fine.

Also, if I were to get the single status paper at the US Consulate in TP.HCM, do i need to get any other documents ready from the US, other than my passport, and for those thave have gotten the single status paper in VN, how long does it take?

You were lied to, get it in America, how can the US consulate in a foreign country even issue one for you? Think about that question while I go on for a minute. Get it done in America it is the only way, also get it notarized, and then when you land you have to fill out an affidavit of single status WITH the US consulate. I think this is where you were confused. I assume you are planning on getting married in Viet Nam. The trick to doing this is get everything you can possibly get done in America prior to landing, and some of this is having your fiancée fill out forms for you, or even scanning them and emailing them then having you sign and send back via currier service before you come here. The medical has to be done in Chao Ray hospital, and you can slip the guy 200,000 dong and they ask like 2 questions and you get passed, then you can pay a few more dong and have the results stamped in a few hours while you wait instead of going back a second day. If you send everything by currier service prior to you arriving in Viet Nam then once you leave Chao Ray you can go to the marriage license place and turn in all the papers since they are already translated. Doing it this way you should be able to have everything done within 2 days of your landing in Viet Nam as long as you land on a day you can go to the US consulate and get the affidavit done which is on Monday and Tuesday before 11 am, someone might shout in if I am incorrect on these dates or time. Once you turn it all in it usually takes 2 weeks I think before you go in for your interview, they will separate the both of you and ask questions about one another, pretty easy, but nerve racking since you are there and this woman has the authority to really screw with you if she wanted to. Then after that I think it is another 2 weeks (depending on holidays) and you go in and sign the documents. You might be able to pay extra here or there to speed it up, some people say they have done it all in 2 weeks, I don’t know how they did it, but they say they did. I feel that if you speed it up and then try for a visa the consular officer would know that the time was sped up and it could cause a red flag, and at the same time they might also understand it since it just takes so dang long and most people don’t have 2 months off to spend getting married. Other advice is people offer services for helping with this, you can hire them to look over your paperwork, do it and make sure it is all right this will also save time. Good luck Jerome

Jerome REALLY confused me...lol.

OK...first of all, are you talking about the Affidavit of Single Status or the Certificate of No Marriage Records?

My recommendation: If you're planning on getting married, get all your paperwork done in the US (some members will say you're wasting your time and money getting the medical done in the US...see comment below...I say just do it). Have all your documents notarized by a notary (as required). Send all notarized documents to the Secretary of State to get certified/authenticated. Send all notarized & certified/authenticated documents to the VN Embassay to get authenticated. Give this process at least 2 months to ensure that you get everything back in time! Once you get to Vietnam, more than likely you'll have to have the medical redone, so go do that as soon as possible just to save yourself time and trouble. Once you have everything in hand, go to the VN Justice Center and file it.

I had everything completed in the US. My Certificate of No Marriage Record took less than 5 minutes to get from the County Courthouse. The Affidavit of Single Status I took the form provided online and filled it out myself and then got it notarized and processed the way I recommended above. Me filling out this form took less than 5 minutes. Me sending all the forms out for the authentications and certifications took about 4 weeks in total. I had to redo the Medical Certificate in VN which wasn't a problem (we were able to get it done same day), but other than that, no problems..

Could some one please tell me how long do I need to be in Vietnam to get the process done and sign the marriage certificate, assumming I had all

my paper works. I am hoping I could get it done in 3-4 weeks. I am really risking my job for it. My fiance failed the interview last year.

Do you think can refile for a fiance visa, or spouse visa better? I am really stress up over this. Thank you all.

for the wedding, if time is a major concern, you can come visit twice, once to start the paperwork, the other to finish/sign marriage certificate. i think the wedding cert has to be signed within 6 months.

don't get the paperwork too early, otherwise they might not accept it (i heard some documents, it's 3 months, but i'm not sure)

also, if time is a major concern, you can do power of attorney, and your fiance can file first. not all provinces will allow this.
