Meanwhile, the unemployment rate increased to 9.6%, from 9.5% in July, in line with expectations. The increase in the rate, however, was caused by the rise in the participation rate to 64.7%.

"On balance, the upward revisions make the report a bit stronger than we expected," says Dean Maki of Barclays Capital. "It does not change the recent trend of moderate growth in private payrolls and is inconsistent with fears that a sharp slowdown in the economy is underway."
