Newt Gingrich: Conservative for Big Government

Newt Gingrich ... in a radio interview today ... said he wants the national government to step in and stop the developers from building the Islamic community center by whatever means necessary.

"I think the Congress has the ability to declare the area a national battlefield memorial because I think we should think of the World Trade Center as a battlefield site; this is a war," he said.

...

And if that fails, he said, the state government should step in and use its considerable power to stymie the development.

"The Attorney General of New York, Andrew Cuomo, could intervene because frankly he has the ability to slow it down for decades if he wants to."

And, if the federal government doesn't intervene, and the state government declines to use its regulatory and enforcement powers to delay a private development project, Gringrich says the mayor should step in.

"I am surprised that Mayor Bloomberg said it was okay and I think that if he reconsiders it, he'll decide its not."

In fact, on whatever level, Gingrich thinks government intervention is the answer.

"There are a number of different steps that could be taken. There's no reason this has to occur and whether it's city, state, or federal there are plenty of ways for America to stop it," Gingrich said.

I hope that means he is going to use the strong arm of government to remove every offensive building in the area then - not just single out this new mosque.

Naah. Like any good American conservative, he's only against "big government" when "big government" benefits people they don't like. If the power of "big government" can be used against people they don't like, they're all for it.

What I don't understand is why building a new mosque is offensive while existing mosques are not. How does that rationale work, any ideas?

Wow I went to post here and then it wasn't there! And I only just noticed the new politics and religion section. Interesting.

While I think Gingrich's idea does exactly represent the "Like any good American conservative, he's only against "big government" when "big government" benefits people they don't like. If the power of "big government" can be used against people they don't like, they're all for it.",that's not true of every. Which you probably know but don't care.

Wait a minute I am confused .... is this a Mosque or "Community center"?

It seems when they play the -Religious persecution card, it's a mosque... when they play the -good neighbor card, it's a community center.

If any church or synagog were to by property to build a pool or club house... would we really suggest neighbors opposing it are trampling on their "Right to worship"?

It's always been clear if you've bothered to pay attention.

It will have one floor of prayer space. The rest will be a community center.
