Exactly. It's supposed to be fun. And reading through 84 posts of ####### to find something useful isn't fun.

sure it is.. its alot of fun. thats what OFF TOPIC is for.

why dont VJ become Private. before anyone can post let all postings under go a review by a select team members. if accepted then we can only see KGB recommended postings. give me a break

this site will DIE quick as hell. VJ is not the ONLY message board. there are 1001 others.

maybe locking or archiving some of the older material so people won't complain about old topics/polls being resurrected. maybe those topics older than 2 months old and polls over 6 months old for a suggestion?

How about not including Off Topics in the Active Topics? So if people want to read them, they have to go there and the people who don't want to read them don't have to trawl through them for info.

Two months is too soon... I'd go with 12 months - if a thread is over a year old there shouldn't be any NEED to resurrect it!

And you could save room by making off-topic posts automatically delete themselves after two years (or 18 months, or '6 months without a post')... most of it is just jokes and games and silly stuff like that - it's fun, but it's hardly of life-threatening importance if it goes away. Making the Divorce forum will remove a whole lot of serious postings from OT and they're the ones that need to be kept.

Don't take the hearts away! They're fun and cute and harmless...

i'm waiting patiently for my first little heart!

actually, i *did* have a suggestion...

would it be possible to include someplace in the Immigration Timelines, a way to track how long folks have been stuck in FBI name check? or, in other words...how long from interview until welcome letter or greencard received?

I object to deletion of any threads that are related to immigration (Off Topic threads are another animal). For some that are active on this site after completing the immigration process, it's frustrating to have to get into another discussion about a topic well covered in the past. Posting a link to one that you recall is valuable to everyone. That's one of the drawbacks that I've noticed when we had to dump the archives earlier this year. Too much information was lost.

Same goes for a member that has not posted in a while. This process takes years. Many fall into inactive status between various stages. If members were deleted to resurrect ID options after a year or more, we'd have more people joining under a pseudonym, because their ID was no longer available. That only creates cause for speculation, troll-watching etc. Gosh, there're billions of options for new IDs. I don't think we've reached that size of membership yet!

As for the search option on acronyms that are under 4 characters long, in the old forum, those had some sort of built-in macro when they first appeared in a post. AOS would be underlined, for example, the first time a member typed it. I'm computer-illiterate, but as a suggestion, is there a way that if the underlining feature were re-installed on this new platform, that for three letter acronyms the search feature could recall tag the macros so as to bring up some results????

Me too. There is no reason OT needs to show up in Active Topics or even View New Posts.

I am not sure what Ewok's level of expertise with PHP is, but many of the things y'all are asking for require advanced PHP skills. Invision has a set collection of changes that can be made without "hacking" the board.

Removing OT from the "Active Topics" thing would require hacking the code. Conversely, if I remember correctly, the squares and hearts thing can just be turned off in the control panel.

Of course, if Ewok is a PHP wiz, then it doesn't matter. lol

I could make it work (active topics) but then every time I upgrade the software I would have to reapply the changes. I tend to not want to hack the code for security reasons as well.

just to be sure, you were asking me to add a way to use the active topics feature but not include off topic?

With my Perl board I don't worry as much about it. But I'm the same way with my PHP board. I avoid hacking it if at all possible. Too many potential vulnerabilities with PHP and MySQL. Plus, the changing with every update gets annoying. lol

How about removing people who have never posted after a certain time. There's nearly 50 people from 2003 who have never posted - just thought it might free up some user ID's.

Building on this suggestion.. I would think some people just aren't confident enough to post.. some just read and read and read and ingest information ... and ok, some just don't have anything to say.. but still if people update their timelines, it would indicate "participation", thus no reason to remove them.

I would say those who have not updated their timelines create more havoc to the accuracy of stats here.

VJ's biggest problem is all those damn people who log on every day. It slows the site down. Any way we can disable logging in for everyone but me?
