as far as I am aware you are limited as to how long you can drive on a UK license and I do not think it is long if at all unless you are driving a hire car.

He can get an international driving license which I think goes down better, just tell him to surf for International driving license an I think they only cost £10.00 here in the UK and are valid for 1 year. Hope that helps and I am sure that if someone knows something for definite, they will be on here and let you know

Depends on the state really as the DMV falls under each individual one. I know in Michigan Paul needs a social security card to get his Drivers License so they told us he's fine with his UK one until he gets that. He can even be on my insurance, I just have to say I gave him premission and he's covered...my insurance agent just said get him a Michigan Drivers license as soon as you can and then he can set up his own insurance policy on his own car.

I'd check with your state DMV or insurance agent - they know the score.

Good luck!

And so he did what countless punk-rock songs had told him to do so many times before: he lived his life

10/07/2006 WEDDING DAY!

11/14/2006 AOS packet made it to 'the box' after being overnighted.

12/02/2006 Paul had biometrics

12/14/2006 AOS Forwarded to CSC AND AP Application approved.

01/17/2007 First touch of 2007 at CSC

01/20/2007 Touched AGAIN (also the 18th) come on...

February: Oops, RFE for a REGISTERED marriage certificate. Oops! Overnighted it.

02/28/2007 Paul gets email letting us know his GREENCARD is on it's way! It's done...for now!

03/09/2007 Paul's greencard arrives. And breathe...

We began with mailing the I-129 in on February 27, 2006 so the whole process took us approx. one year.

Good luck out there!

I wouldnt bother with an International Permit, your UK license is written in English so you would only be wasting your money with it. Living in California I could use my UK license for up to a year, but like the other poster said, you will need to check with your state DMV.

Here in MA I can use my UK licence for up to 12 months from my date of entry.... I was included on my husbands insurance without any problems just had to fax a copy of the paper part of my licence....

I drove myself to my MA driving test using my UK licence and drove home on my MA licence....

Found this:-

Drivers From Other Nations

Georgia recognizes valid driver licenses issued to and held by residents of other countries as long as the "Out Of Country" license is valid. You do not need to apply unless you become a resident of Georgia.

Here is the link... http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/DLdata.aspx?...71440&ty=dl

Hope this helps

but then you have to find out what they consider "resident". The States are different than immigration. Here in NC I was considered a legal resident 60 days after I arrived and was required to have a local driving license by then. I went to the licensing office and took the computer test, and they waived the road test because I took a driver abstract (driving record) from Ontario with me. I didn't have my SSN yet but I just had to sign a waiver that said I didn't have one yet.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Man, I must be in the worst state. Here my UK license was only valid for 30 days. Now I have to wait to get my work permit, so that I can get a ss card, so I can then start to 'learn' to drive here and get a license.

Pfft.. vegas sucks :(

It must vary state to state because Craig could drive on his just fine until he became a resident of the state of WI...can't remember now, but I think that was after we got married. After that he had to have a WI license within 30 days. M.

No, I think California is the worst. You can only drive on a non-California license for 10 days after becoming a California resident. And for the purposes of the drivers license law, you become a California resident as soon as you rent an apartment or otherwise set up living quarters in California, regardless of your immigration status. But of course, you can't get a California license until you can show appropriate proof of immigration status. That leaves quite a few people in limbo for a period of time when they can't legally drive on an out of state license, but can't get a California license, either.

And yes, this sort of thing does vary widely from one state to the next.

Think us Arizonians (?!) are pretty lucky when it comes to this:

What is needed for a person from another country to drive in Arizona?

You may legally drive in Arizona using a valid driver license from another country. An International Driving License or Permit is not required, but is recommended since it can be printed in English, and can be used in conjunction with the driver license from the other country. If an International Driving License or Permit is used alone, it must be issued by a country other than the United States. Vehicle rental companies may have additional requirements.

That's from the AZ DMV, here's the link: http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/faqs/scripts/faqs.asp?section=dl

I am sure it depends on the state you are living in. I live in Oregon, I called my insusrance company and they said if my fiance had an inernational drivers liscense and my permission to dive my car then he would be covered on my insurance, although this would not be a long term solution, once able to obtain an official state drivers licence he should do so.

Pfft.. vegas sucks :(

So, what happens if you DON'T apply in 30 days?

Can you still apply for it later? Do you have to take all the tests all over again?

I am about to apply for the driver's license here in Texas and I have started to study the handbook. I freaked out when I read the following:

"New residents who are properly licensed have 30 days after entry into the state to secure a Texas driver's license"

Now, is this only for new residents from out of state, or does it apply to us, too?

I've had a valid license from my home country for almost 5 years, but I have barely ever used it  because the town I lived in is very small and you can pretty much walk everywhere, plus there is an amazing transportation system to go about anywhere.

I got my Green Card last November and I worked at the same company my hubby works, so I never needed to drive until now. Actually, I put it off as long as possible, because the idea of driving here in the US freaks me out!!! :crying:

Is now too late for me to apply?

I will try to go to the DMV next week to ask all of these questions and hopefully apply for the license, but right now I am confused!!! :help:

Wisconsin has a stupid law that say's you need to get a drivers within 30 days of becoming a resident. In order to prove residency they are fairly strict. Leases are not acceptible, for example. Acceptible is a utility bill (not a cell phone bill, however.) The catch is it has to be more than 30 days old. There is an exception to the 30 day rule after becoming a resident if you cannot get the proff within that time period. It seems rather silly to me.
