Ok well I am well and truly frustrated with this whole process!

Where to start.... Well I filed my AOS on May 17th 2010 and my case got transfered to the California Office mid July and heard nothing more from them. On August 2 I received my work authorization card in the mail. My case process online said that they sent the notification form which I did not receive (I have double checked the mail service and neighbors etc). Well I thought everything was fine because I had the actual work authorization card in my hand. I went to the social security office and was told that they had to wait for USCIS to update their records and that could take about 10 days. Well its been 3 weeks now and I haven't received anything from SS. I called them up today and they ran the check and they STILL had no information on me from USCIS. They also said that the time had expired, so I would be getting a notice in the mail to say my application for a social security number is denied and I will have to go back into the office to reapply.

So I called up the USCIS to ask why the social security office hasn't got any information on me so they can complete the SSN application. I explained I had not received the notice but I had received the card. One of the three people stated it would cost $345 to mail another copy of the notification - I-797. I asked if they were sure they weren't talking about a replacement card which I know costs about that much to re-issue but she reconfirmed it was for another copy of the form. After going back and forth, I was told to make an infopass appointment to talk to an immigration officer who can give me information. Well here is the kicker... the next available appointment isn't until Sep 16th! MORE WAITING! If I hadn't called up and enquired as to why it was taking so long, I would not have known about this infopass appointment! Without the I-797 notification in hand, will this appointment be invalid? I know I am being pedantic about this notification, but its a paper trail and I may need it later on EVEN THOUGH I HAVE MY AUTHORIZATION CARD.

Is anyone else in the same situation as myself? I don't even know what I should bring to this appointment. The person on the phone at the USCIS basically said it was social securities fault that they didn't have any information on me! My authorization card is dated July 26th 2010!!!!! they should have updated the system... is it not automated??!!

Any advice anyone can give me would be much appreciated.... I need to get a job!!!!! 6 months into this country and I haven't been able to work and this has meant living with my husbands mother and step father.... add that we live in Texas and can't drive... I am stranded.... I am losing my mind! ok rant over!

Thanks

Amanda

you should call into USCIS, get an ISO, have a long conversation, get things sorted out there, first -

see http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/structure/gc_1221837986181.shtm#5

re: SSN - is EAD card in Visa Name, or 'Married Name' ??

If in 'Married Name' - that's the bit that may be tripping you up, at SSA office, as they can't you in the SAVE database yet in yer married name. I suggest when you go back, apply in VISA name, have the clerk look you up with VISA Name or A#, and then show the EAD card and yer marriage certificate.

If the SSA clerk gives you any nonsense, ask for a supervisor. Most 'front desk clerks' are clueless about ID requirements, even more clueless about the SAVE database system.

If you have any issues with the SAVE database, it is possible to get things updated properly, see http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextchannel=1721c2ec0c7c8110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD&vgnextoid=1721c2ec0c7c8110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD for the proper update process.

so - start with USCIS, get that ISO, have a longish conversation about that notice, USUALLY if the 'system' says it was sent, and you not receive it - then is good possibility that the postal mail was returned back to USCIS. You need to ask if it was returned, or not, verify yer address (I'm betting nothing has changed) and then request that the notice be sent back to you. The ISO is authorized to submit a 'resend notice' request, no $$$ required for that.

Whew !

Let us know how it turns out, tomorrow ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Don't sweat it, it's nothing to worry about , sometimes USCIS just hasn't updated their system. The same thing happened to me when I took my EAD to MVA to apply for my D/L and I had to wait a few days for them to get confirmation from USCIS. Once the confirmation is received then you're good to go.

Just go back to the SSN office in a few days and re-apply. Good luck.
