Don't you have to sign an I-864 to bring your parents here? And if so, won't you be liable for all their medical bills? Really, the only ones getting free emergency medical treatment for free that I know of are illegals. Wouldn't be more advantageous to bring them here illegally?

The sponsorship thing covers Government costs such as food stamps - the guarantor is liable for them

As far as private bills are concerned (health care etc), each individual is on their own.

Even if they die we are not responsible for their costs - that is an urban myth of which there are many.

If an individual has been in the country 5 years and is 65, they can buy into Medicare at 65 $6600 per annum.

I will be in that position at 65 if my wife stops working and I cannot get insurance via her work

I can finally get Medicare on her contribution record when she is 62 but I would have to pay $6,600pa from my 65th to her 62nd
