Hey all

Can anyone recommend any good wedding insurance companies stateside?

We're getting married on the Gulf Coast right at the end of hurricane season and seeing Earl, Fiona and Gaston lining up in the Atlantic has made me spring into action... ;)

Any suggestions gratefully received!!

I don't know of any, Jess, but I just wanted to say congrats. Love your avatar, very cute photo.

I used to live right outside Sunderland, and now I live in Orlando too.

I grew up in Florida, and I have to say in all the years I've been here, hurricanes have usually always missed us. There was of course Andrew in the 90s, I was back home in S Fla when he hit Miami and it was horrible. And then I think in 04 there was some hurricanes that hit Central Fla (I was living in the UK at the time though). Anyways, my point is, since the 70s, we're talking a few hurricanes, so if you can't find a reputable company here, or the price is too dear, maybe playing the odds will be ok?

Other than that, the only advice I have is that some venues self-insure. So when you're booking the arrangements, you can ask if they will insure it at a higher per person cost.

Congrats!!

I don't really consider it drastic action - I wanted to get wedding insurance anyway, but have been too lazy to do so up to now! There is a reason I get called 'Calamity Jess'........random and stupid things happen to me  So I just want to make sure we're covered if something random and stupid does happen. I agree on the hurricane front we'd be really, really, really unlucky, but you never know...

I will definitely check with my venue if they self-insure first - thanks for the tip. Small world going from the north-east to Orlando! :) My parents live up near Middlesbrough still...

As a random aside what are you doing work-wise, if anything?

Yes, very small world! Middlesbrough! Hah, used to go there all the time. I lived in Easington Village. Had some friends in Leeds and would go down for a fun night out at the gay bars,

As for the work situation, I'm the USC, so I've got no hurdles like the work permit, etc to contend with. But I'm a realtor here in Orlando...taking a couple of months off right now cos I'm due to pop with our first child on Monday.

I think you will be OK. Have a few friends in Clearwater and my future wife is Orlando. The only hurricanes i've heard mentioned that caused 'hassle' are Andrew ('91?) & Charlie.

I head off on Thursday and i suspect that i'll have a few possible hurricances to 'dodge'. :)

This is a good article about wedding insurance. On the right hand side they list a couple of different companies. http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/wedding-budget/articles/wedding-insurance-101.aspx

Other than doing a google search for related topics, thats the best advice I can give. I thought about getting wedding insurance for awhile just based on the fact that we're doing the thing you're definitely not supposed to do and are planning a wedding (with a date and contracts and everything) even before the visa has been issued. But after talking to a couple of people we sort of figured out that wedding insurance doesn't really cover lack of groom due to delayed k-1 visa! In the end we decided it's just not for us.

Also, I just wanted to mention that I'm sitting in Boston right now looking out my window and there's not a drop of rain in sight. I suppose it is only still relatively early and maybe Earl is just running late or something. But after our governor declared a state of emergency due to the impending hurricane I was expecting something a little more ...exciting?

Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful, catastrophe-free wedding and that if you do get that insurance, you don't end up needing it! :luv:
