Any advice for victims of dishonest movers?

In May 2010 my fiance received his K1 visa, bought his ticket to the US, and contracted with a moving company to move his belongings to the USA from Germany. Paid in full.

He left the country confident that his container would follow shortly.

It didn't.

We called & called, and then they stopped answering their phone.

My (now) husband contacted his lawyer there, who reported it to the court system.

We found out today that the mover is bankrupt (hundreds of thousands of euro in debts).

Not only will we not get our money back, we have no idea where his items are located or how we can recover them.

Fifty six years of life whittled down to boxes that we may never see again.

And of course he can't leave the USA now with his AOS pending.

It just makes me sick. And ANGRY!!!

Sorry about what happend to you guys, my father used a storage system to store some of his mothers things when she passed away, the owners were stealing things out of all the storage units slowly over a period of time while tracking the storage renters times that they went to check their belongings.

He should have done a background check because thos storage people had been reported numeros times for "lost" and "missing" items. All I can say is, it doesnt matter what country you live in... always always always do background checks on companys before paying or giving them anything..

Not sure how the moving industry is regulated in Germany, but in the USA you are not protected.

We are about to relocate once again and the following website was recently suggested to me as a resource for information:

http://www.movingscam.com/

Legal action may prove fruitless in your case.

Therefore, I suggest that you recruit a Germany based family member to chase down your property in person.

Wishing you all the best.
