Yes he is lol, bought a 3 hour drive there and back, but he also works at different locations so he goes to the office in Herndon then ends up at falls church, or Alexandria, even Waldorf one day. I cannot wait to live in Northern Virgina almost everywhere is nice except ummm leesburg we went to see some "apartments" in leesburg and well its just not the place for raising children or atleast not what I saw.

As with all places there are some nicer and some not so nice. Ashburn/ Lansdowne are big bedroom communities which are little closer then leesburg

What I find is that they have a lot of subdivions full of townhouse or huge beastly houses...but when yous tart looking for a condo or apartment you aren;t in the nicer subdivisions anymore - maybe it's just me. Alexandria is nice - pricier i think depending where you are.

Krikit had a thread going when she was moving here - maybe someone can point that out

I can recommend an apartment in Arlington---BArton house!!! Was awesome (for an apartment) Another VJ memeber lived there too at 1 time (they bought a house too) derekkj! .25 to was, .25 to dry! Staff super friendly, knew you by 1st name, awesome location! Only downfall, almost impossible to get in! Long waiting list, BUT if you knew someone that lived there, and they vouched for you, magically, you got near the top! We have 1 friend that stil resides there in a studio, and loves it!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

A tad too expensive for us right now. Maybe for us forever hehe they start at 1200 for a studio. I need more like a 2-3 Bedroom and well 2000 dollars a month without utilities is a little too much for my likings. I would like to eat at some point :)

I guess their prices have increased. I think we paid around $1200 a month for a 1 bedroom, that included utilities and even a very good cable channel line up!! You can checkout craigslist. Wil be renting out our Condo in falls Church this Spring, that is if my wife gets her way,lol I just want to drop it (sell it) and not worry about it when we move!

You can try "Oaks At Falls Church" (2-BR/1BA no-den runs $1,400-1550 rent-plus-utilities) and the facing "Peachtree At McLean" (pricier than Oaks).

Both located about 1 mile inside 495 on VA-7.

Yup, we bought a house in Alexandria and except for your typical homeowners ####### (tree branch falling on roof during last storm, replacing heat pump, broken electrical meter base etc.) we have really enjoyed it. Of course on days like those we wish we were back at Barton House so that Bobbie and Mike were there to take care of it all!

Agree too that Redfin is great. That's actually who we used to buy our house. Very addictive tho!

BTW, Krikit, I am trying to get my Mom to move down to the Haymarket/Gainesville area. I work on Capitol Hill too and would love to live out that way but figure the commute would kill me right now.

Wheee! Welcome back, derekkj!

Where is your Mom living now? This area is not only beautiful and scenic, it's also very peaceful. I hear you about the commute. It's an hour on the VRE train. My husband is trying to find a bus like they have in Loudoun County (where we stayed for 4 months) so he can sleep better. LOL. He flies around the country a lot, though, so it's nice to be relatively close to the major airports. He also gets to work from home for 2 days of the week, so it's not as bad for him.

We're in VA as well, Berryville like Valerie78.

I work in Winchester, and John works in Chantilly at 50 and 28. He commutes in every day and hates it

Can't blame him, I used to commute in with him to either Fairfax area, or down towards Gainesville.

Would love to move closer for him, but the taxes and housing prices are so expensive out that way. Clarke county is nice and I like it here :)

Lol, never stopped lurking in the Canada forum but now usually in the Citizenship forum since Derek applied this month. More USCIS fun! :jest:

Look who the cat dragged in!!!!! Howdy!!!

Right now my Mom is in Vermont and may need some coaxing to come down south. She is getting older though and after years of taking care of her own Mom is realizing that it might be wise to move closer to family so that we can take care of her when the time comes. But she just loves Vermont and wants to stay there as long as possible. Both my brother and I went to school in Lexington, VA (which is in the Shenandoah) and I have been in Northern VA for almost 15 years so at least she knows the area and likes it. Beautiful, scenic and peaceful sounds like exactly what she is looking for.

Commuting in the DC metro area sucks no matter where you are, sigh. Sometimes it takes me almost 45 minutes to go about 5 miles as the crow flies, lol. And I really envy your husbands ability to telecommute. I can't really do it with my job but keep hoping that they will at least allow us to do a flex scheudule where I can work longer hours in exchange for a day off every other week.

Hope you guys are getting settled in!

Ugh. I need to start looking at citizenship but I'm having a hard time getting past the thought of more paperwork. lol

Vermont, eh? I can see where you'd have a hard time convincing your Mom to leave there. lol. We are only, just now, settling in after arriving here at the end of March. It's been a crazy year for us, plus a terrible time trying to find somewhere to live. Now that we have our belongings back -- well.... most of them, anyway dry.gif -- the place is starting to feel more and more like home. I really do love this area. I'm a little confused as to why the neighbours keep setting up their lawnchairs on our lawn and playing football in our yard, however . So I went outside and introduced myself, yesterday. Told them I thought I'd do it since they were always over here. It didn't seem to phase them, but they were very nice. Turns out they're from Florida, too, so I can't attach the behaviour to some sort of State quirk. lol
