You "had to" or you did? You did not have to show it for a job, the I-9 does not require it.

HR told me to bring it so I think that means I "had to."

I probably could've fought them on the issue (and won) and then returned to my job search.

I have no criminal experience, so I guess I missed that need for it. I guess I should go file to replace it just in case.

I'm sure you wouldn't be the first criminal without one. But, UNlike the rest of them, I'm sure sitting in jail while waiting for your new one wouldn't float your boat.

I have never needed it for the IRS, their records connect your number with you.

Oh. So that's why the IRS guy told me "give me your SSN card." He probably didn't know the rules or procedures.

Some form of ID should be all you need, and never for a drivers license. I have given my number many times of course and if anyone asked for my card (and I do not recall any occasions when they did) I would just say..."I lost it"

Never in Vermont or never anywhere?

I will not allow ignorant clerks to inconvenience my family...even a little. I will tolerate and comply with the law, and that is ALL. No more, not even a little, not even EVER. This situation exists because when faced with incompetence, the average person slinks away. I will not.

You better never move out of Vermont. If you do... don't move to an urban area. If you do, you'll need your SSN card when you're dealing with the criminal process.

Never anywhere Slim. I have not had an SS card in my posession since...before you were born. During that time I have lived in the urban areas of Dallas, Chicago, Louisville. And foreign countries in two hemispheres. Never needed it.

Doesn't matter what the IRS guy would say to me. I lost it. And what? Now I don't need to pay tax? Audit over, pardon me?

HR? It means they don't know the rules either and can't read an I-9. I lost it. If having an SS card or not makes the difference in if they employ me, I don't want to work there. I doubt it would make any difference. Never has yet. I am there because they know I will produce more for them than they pay me, so will you or the job wouldn't be offered. They are not going to turn away money because I lost my SS card.

We comply with the law because we have to. Some people comply with silly company policies because they are piglet's tails.

I find the passive refusal the best Slim. Try it. Social Security card? "I lost it in 1973" Er....Ok, well, I guess we can just use your passport to prove you are eligible to work. You should probably apply to get a new card. "Yes, thank you" I am perfectly satisfied saying to my inner self "screw you b*tch"

To be perfectly honest, I stopped in the bank to pick up the bank letter for the interview and asked the branch President what I was going to need to add Alla to our account. A SS card was not on the list, a SS NUMBER was. No surprises. Best to know all the detais and grease the skids before you are in the position to "have" to do something or "have no choice" or look like a piglet's tail

I really did lose it and it can just stay that way

Gary,

You sure are long winded, guy. I keep reading your post as if you were Winston Churchill.... it makes it funnier that way (Neva, Neva, surrender to the bank tellers!). Thx for hijacking the threat with your rants btw. My question had nothing to do with SS #'s but thanks for the righteousness, you defiantly fight for yer right to par-tay. Mike D would be proud.

For those of you who decided to help, Thanks again! Zhanna has kinda OD'd on all the info you guys have dropped. She says "Spasibo!".

Also,

In SC you need a SS card to have a Drivers License.

The SS card is one of the options if you don't have one of the preferred documents, but it must be backed up with another one. The SS administration NOR the SS card authorize work.

Does NY require an SS card or a SS number? Vermont asks for (but does not require) a SS NUMBER to get a drivers license. Seriously, I lost my SS card in 1973 and have not needed it since in 5 states, 4 countries and numerous passports and visas including foreign work visas. Alla's SS card has never been out of the house. She has a drivers license, is a student, has her own bank accounts and credit cards.

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/license.htm#driversmoving

The procedure specifically states that you must show your SS card or have a letter from the SS office stating you are ineligible to receive a SS card. I didn't try to get around it since I figured bringing it was the easier option so I don't know if you can. But it pretty clearly states that you need to have it.

Some people comply with silly company policies because they are piglet's tails.

I'm an employed piglet's tail as opposed to an unemployed man with dignity enough to offer resistance to HR at the only company that's been willing to hire me in the past four months.

Yes. My dignity is for sale. As much as I'd like to keep it, an issue like NOT showing my SSN card to a perspective employer (only perspective employer in four months) because I'm not legally obligated to do so and they can't seem to read an I-9 just doesn't seem like a worthy enough battle. I'm inclined to believe a roof over my head (and my wife's) is more important than keeping my dignity and proving to them I'm right.

At least for now, anyway.

I find the passive refusal the best Slim. Try it.

I probably should since my active refusal doesn't always go over well. However, even with compromising my dignity on issues like showing HR my SSN card when I'm not legally required to, I can't passively nod and smile while saying "screw you, b!tch" in my head.

Best to know all the detais and grease the skids before you are in the position to "have" to do something or "have no choice" or look like a piglet's tail

Definitely the preferred method. But, not my case right now. I'm a piglet's tail at the moment.

Hilarious! I'm going to start doing that too. Winston Churchill. HA!

And I'll take even money on Gary not knowing who Mike D is. (Not without a google search, anyway. Although, I'm pretty sure he'd love the Beastie Boys.)

If you are happy, that is what is important. :D Sit around with Chris and sing "Kum by ya"

Best not to say you aren't going to do something...just don't do it. They want to schedule a meeting at 9:30 am. OK. I will be there at 10. I don't SAY I will be there at 10, I just arrive at 10.

But anyway, I haven't lived in any of those places where you need a SS card to get a Drivers license. In Vermont you don't even need a SS number. The application asks for one, but if you don't have one you just enter 999-99-9999 Good thing I guess.

Had I ever lived in NY I may have had to replace my card to get a drivers license. I would have been more likely to move to Vermont.

If I read your posts as if they were stand up comedy from "The Cable Guy" they seem less pathetic.

You are welcome to compare me to Winston Churchill any time though, thanks.

And Zhanna and I thank you for the info you have provided. But my wife shouldn't have to read insults directed at me from you when she reads the thread. I assume you don't talk to acquaintances like this in real life, so all I was asking was to answer my question in a civil manner, but you continued, unapologetic.

If you respond to questions in my thread with clown like answers, I will treat you like the clown you are acting as for now, if that is what you wish (Your Choice). If you feel you have something positive to add then by all means do, again I have always enjoyed your conversations in the past, perhaps that's why I was taken back by your words in this post, I always thought we had a good report in the past. If you cannot think of anything positive or just simply can't censor your judgments, I employ you to comment on other ppls threads that will tolerate it. (I'm taking a page from your playbook).

And my brand of comedy is much funnier then the "cable guy" how dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!:o

Update.

Zhanna was successfully added to the bank accounts with no problem today. The bank rep with whom I dealt with this time said that sometimes right after a SS# is issued it takes a week or so for the number to be recognized from credit agencies, etc (I was told this by the 1st rep and by the SS operator last time). She was very apologetic that this could not be taken care of the first time we came in.

Again, thanks to everyone for their help and input. Zhanna will begin contacting agencies for her diplomas sometime this week.

Zhanna also, starts her new job as a retail clerk at clothes store near my job. It is good because we are saving to get her a car and with her job in the same plaza as where I work the money she'll be making will be helpful until she gets her diploma stuff under control and we make decisions about school and work options for the future.

Thanks everyone.
