I am thinking of bringing some American TV shows to Vietnam, so she can learn English and learn about American culture. I am thinking of bring Friends or Frazier (this show tends to use big vocabulary though). What would you recommend?

Disney, HBO, and BBC are shown in Vietnam, without voiceover. Many movies and TV shows on DVD can be bought on the street for 50 cents. So if you bring any DVDs over, they might laugh at you.

I really doubt that she will laugh at me but it is good to know that many American TV shows are that easily accessible.

i would have gotten my wife sesame st. very basic, teaching mode and it helps with pronunciation.

Yeah, but I doubt she really want to watch Sesame street though. I cannot stand it when I was 9 years old; she is 19 now.

I am afraid that only youtube are accessible from Vietnam. There are copyright issues that most likely prevent us from access Hulu and the networks' own site.

Most of these tv shows are only going to show a subsection of American culture anyway and it wouldn't do her much good if those shows don't relate to your particular lifestyle, which is what she'll be sharing when she arrives here. I think it would be better to show personal videos of your daily activities, hanging out with friends, family, and/or co-workers, since that is what she'll be adapting to in the future. Also, calling her regularly to discuss culture and events will also help to familiarize her with these things.

As for learning the language, my wife has been taking evening classes at a training institution for a few years now but I'm not entirely fond of that system. Right now they're re-educating her on the wonderful world of Ho Chi Minh and Marxist theory. But she refused when I offered to pay for private tutor lessons, which I think would be the ideal option.

My wife has cable, so we could probably watch some American movies and shows. I am just going to stick with show like Friends because the accent in that show is pretty much Standard American English.

Thuy watches some online, but has bought many seasons on DVD of her fav shows.. Prison Break and lately her fav is Jack Bower... she is almost through all of 24... having VN subtitles really helps so instead of buying them here just get them in VN.... cheaper and w/subtitles in VN

How is her English? Can she have a normal conversation in English?

Yeah, how accurate are those Vietnamese subtitles? In any case, I probably do that instead of buying it here.

When we started out as pen pals two years ago, our conversations were pretty rough but now we can comfortably understand each other with slow-paced discussions. A little patience, simplified vocabulary and repetition is still needed at times, especially when talking on the phone, but our communication has certainly improved over the years. I think talking to someone regularly is a big help for learning a new language as opposed to watching tv shows. I've been watching subtitled anime for over 10 years now but all I've ever gotten from it is a few common phrases and words like "Sugoi!".
